Prescott, right.

He’s asking about Prescott and how I ran after him like some foolish little girl.

There is nothing nice about me.

He was right about that one. There isn’t anything nice about him. Oh no, Prescott Wentworth is one giant asshole. That’s what he is. And the next time I see him, I’ll show him exactly what I think about him and his assholish ways.

“I’m sorry,” I give him an apologetic smile. “My head is just all over the place.”

“Is there something going on between you two?”

“What? No!” My heart starts beating faster at his question. Did he see what happened earlier? Is that why he asked? I went to the bathroom to make sure I looked presentable before joining the table, but maybe I missed something. “He’s my brother’s best friend, and after he stormed out like that… Well, I just wanted to check on him and make sure he was okay.”

Michael watches me for a moment as if he’s weighing my words. “You sure it’s just that?”

“Trust me. I can’t stand him, and the feeling is mutual, but regardless he is Nixon’s best friend.”

Except when he’s kissing me.

Something to remember when you go back inside to your perfect little date. Can he make you feel like I do, doll?

I swear I could still feel the burn from when his mouth was pressed against mine. He was angry, and he wanted to punish somebody, and that somebody was me. I didn’t mind it because I wanted to do the same. I wanted to get out this anger and frustration and fear on somebody. And Prescott? He could take it. He could take on my demons and come out swinging.

Don’t think about him.

“I’m sorry for storming off like that. It wasn’t fair to you.”

“It’s fine, really. Let me walk you to the door?”

Nodding, I slide my bag over my shoulder and get out of the car. The night air is chilly as I meet Michael at the front of his car.

“You really should let me do that.”

“It’s not a date thing. I can get out of the car alone, so what’s the point in waiting?”

“So you can let the guy feel useful?”

“I’m sure there are better ways to do that,” I let out a soft chuckle as we get to the door. “I did have fun tonight, though.”

The corner of Michael’s mouth curls up. “Enough for you to give me a chance for an actual date?”

“I…” I open my mouth, but no words come out.

Understanding flashes on his face. “I see.”

“No, you don’t. You’re really a great guy, and I did have fun, but…”

“Not enough to give me a chance? I get it.” He tries to walk around me, but I step in his way.

“I’m not in a good place right now, Michael,” I admit softly. It’s the first time I’ve said the words out loud and to a virtual stranger, no less. “That’s why I said no in the first place. I can’t be dating or in a relationship right now, and you deserve a girl who’ll be all in. I’m not that girl. I’m not sure I’ll ever be that girl again.”

Michael takes a moment to consider my words before nodding. “Okay. Don’t be a stranger, and come next time with Grace. We need to have a rematch.”

“You can try.” Rising on the tips of my toes, I wrap my arms around him. “Thanks for tonight, Michael.”

“You know it.”

Pulling back, I unlock the door and slide inside the building, and make my way to my apartment. With Rei traveling, and Grace at Mason’s, the place is quiet as I walk down the hallway. I enter my room, closing the door behind me, but before I can flip the switch, the light turns on.
