“I promised we’d keep an eye on her. Plus, Mason should come after he’s done with work too.”

“See? That’s why athletes can never have small get-togethers.”

“Oh, shush. He was coming here anyway. Besides, maybe we’ll be home by the time he’s done with his shift at the bar.”

“I guess we’ll see about that.” I hop off the bed. “Give me a few to change.”

“What did I tell you?” I look over my shoulder at Grace and Penny as we enter Spencer’s apartment. The door was left unlocked, and the music was blasting loud enough to be heard out in the hallway.

Penny tightens her grip on Grace’s hand, and her wide eyes scan the room, probably trying to focus through all the noise.

“Didn’t you say this was a small gathering?” Penny asks, her fingers clasping around her white cane tighter.

I stop in my tracks and turn toward her. “Do you want to leave? Because if you’re not comfortable, we’ll do just that. No harm done.”

For a moment, I think she’ll agree, I know I would have if I were in her shoes, but in the end, she surprises me and shakes her head. “No. Let’s do it. Just…” Her throat bobs as she swallows. “Just don’t leave me alone?”

Grace rubs her arm. “No way. One of us will be with you at all times.”

“Thanks,” Penny whispers, visibly relaxing. “I know you probably think it’s silly but…”

“It’s not silly at all,” I stop her before she can even finish. “I can see just fine, and these kinds of things can get overwhelming. I don’t even want to imagine how it must be to have two senses virtually cut off.”

“Not fun at all.”

“We’ve gotcha. Ready?”

Penny nods her head. “As I’ll ever be.”

I turn around to find a few people watching us. Rolling my eyes at them, I take Penny’s hand in mine and help her through the crowd deeper into the apartment. “How about we find something to drink?” I loudly say so she can hear me.

“I don’t think alcohol is the best choice right now. I can’t be blind, deaf, and drunk.”

“I guess not,” I chuckle. “Although one drink might help you relax.”

“One drink will definitely relax you.”

I turn around to find Spencer in front of us, a big grin on his face. “And who do we have here?”

Grace rolls her eyes at him. “Spencer, Penny, our very dear, very sweet friend. Penny, Spencer. Don’t fall for his charm. He’s a womanizer.”

“Hey, is that the best you’ve got to say about me, Red?”

“All I’m saying is the truth.”

“Hardly,” he waves her off, taking a pull from his beer. “Don’t listen to her. Her taste’s questionable at best.”

“Questionable?”

“You don’t like hockey players! Of course, it’s questionable.”

Grace jabs him in his chest. “Just because I can see you for who you are, Spencer Monroe does not mean my taste is questionable!”

“Whatever you say, Red.” Spencer shakes his head and moves out of the way so a couple can pass by. “What can I getcha to drink? Beer? Vodka?”

We move with him to the kitchen, where a few guys are standing next to the keg.
