“C’mon, let’s get the hell out of here.”

Wrapping his arm around my waist, he pulls me into his side. “Is this okay?”

“Yeah, this is fine.”

I don’t bother pulling my white cane out of my pocket and just let him guide me through the pouring rain. A mistake because when we get to the edge of the curb, I don’t notice it and slip.

My yelp gets stuck in my throat, but before my ass can hit the ground, a hand tightens around me, steadying me.

“Dammit! Are you okay?”

My throat bobs as I swallow, my heart hammering loudly in my chest. “I’m fine, just…” I shake my head.

“Screw this.” Sebastian’s hands let go of me, and before I can ask him what he’s doing, he says: “Hop on.”

“What?” I extend my hand only to touch his firm muscles. My hand slides over the surface of his wet shirt that’s clinging to his skin.

His back.

“Hop on. I’ll carry you back.”

Carry me back?

“W-what? You can’t do that.” I shake my head. “I’ll just grab my—”

“It’ll be faster, and I won’t have to worry about you breaking your neck in the process. Hop on, Birdy.”

I consider fighting him on this, but then the rain starts falling harder, and lightning strikes in the distance.

“Fine.”

Stepping closer, I slide my arms around his neck, and his hands wrap around the back of my legs. Before I know it, he straightens to his full height. I wrap myself tighter around him, my chin resting on his shoulder.

“Don’t let me fall.”

He turns toward me, his warm breath tickling my skin. “Never,” he promises, his thumbs skimming over my thigh.

We don’t talk as he walks us back to our apartment building and inside. His strides are even, lulling me to sleep. His scent and warmth don’t help the matter in the least.

I must have dozed off because the next thing I know, I hear Sebastian’s soft voice calling my name.

Moaning in protest, I blink my eyes open, a shiver running through me.

“There you are,” he says softly. “We’re home.”

“Oh…”

Slowly, I loosen my grip on him and slide down to my feet. “Thanks for bringing me home.”

“Anytime.”

I unzip my bag, pull out my key, and open the door. Henry comes trotting almost immediately. I place my hand on top of his head, scratching him between his ears as I enter my apartment, but when I don’t hear footsteps following after me, I look over my shoulder. “Do you wanna come inside?”

Although the question is relatively innocent, we both know what it implies, and I can’t stop the heat from rising up my face.

Sebastian lets out a soft, growly sound. “Not tonight.”

“What? But…” I bite the inside of my cheek, stopping the question from coming out. What should I ask anyway? Why are you not coming inside and continuing where that kiss left off?
