Because I’d never forgive myself if something were to happen to her.

“I want you to suffer,” Bobby spits out, his face hardening as he glares at me. “Just like Christian suffered standing in your shadow for all those years. Always the backup to the big Bash Black. Getting your scraps and having to settle for it.”

“It wasn’t like that, he…”

“Wasn’t it?!” Bobby yells, his cheeks turning red with rage. “Wasn’t it like that? He wanted to be his own person. His own artist, but the only thing he ever did was open for you. While your songs would blow up instantly, his got merely a few views. And people referred to him as that guy who opens for Black. You can lie to yourself all you want, but it was you who killed him.”

“Don’t listen to him, Sebast—” Penelope’s words are cut off by her yelp of pain as Bobby grabs her harder.

“Shut up, you little bitch, or I’ll really blow up that pretty head of yours.”

The barrel of the gun presses harder against her head, my throat going dry as I watch his finger shake above the trigger.

If he were to press it, even by accident…

Cold sweat washes over me, the terror making my heart race.

“Stop it. What do you want me to do? I’ll give you anything just… let her go. Okay? Just let her go, and I’ll do whatever you want me to.”

Something flickers on his face. Interest, maybe? He mulls over my words carefully as I try to slow down my breathing, not daring to blink because of the fear that he could take Penelope away from me.

He had my whole fucking world in his hands, and he knew it.

I would give him anything, do anything just to keep Penelope safe.

“Beg.”

The word is said so softly, at first, I’m not sure if I heard him correctly. The corner of his mouth curls in a twisted smile.

“Get on your knees and beg me to spare your little bird’s life, and I might reconsider.”

My heart thumps furiously, the sound echoing in my ears as I clench and unclench my sweaty palms.

That’s all? That’s all it would take to satisfy this morbid need he has for revenge? For me to get on my knees and beg?

“No!” Penelope protests, trying to struggle out of his hold. “Don’t you…”

“Quiet!” Bobby hisses, tugging at her hair and pulling her head back.

My throat bobs as I swallow, forcing my voice to be steady. “It’s fine, Penelope.”

With my gaze firmly on his, I get to my knees. A satisfactory gleam shines in his eyes as he watches me.

Sick, twisted bastard.

Penelope is still trying to struggle out of his hold. Stubborn, infuriating woman. Even with the gun pressed against her head, she can’t let somebody else fight her battles.

If I didn’t love her already, this might have been the moment I’d have fallen for her.

“Happy? That’s what you wanted, right? To see me on my knees? Now let her go.”

Just let her go.

A smirk flashes on Bobby’s face. “I didn’t hear you beg, Bash.”

Penelope shakes her head, but Bobby is too focused on me to pay her any attention. Or the fact that security is slowly moving behind him.

It’s better this way.
