“Hold up, Harriet.” I put my hands up. “Let me start my first day at the internship before we have me as the next justice.”

“Okay?” she said, giggling. “I just wanted you to know that I’m behind you whatever you decide.”

“I know you guys are. For all our joking, I know you two have got my back.”

Chapter8

“Hey, so are you excited for tomorrow?” Chelsea asked me as she brushed her hair.

I stared at her for a couple of seconds and wrinkled my nose.

“Hey, what is it, Polly?”

“I don’t know. I feel like I made a mistake,” I said.

“What do you mean you made a mistake?”

“I don’t know. I feel like this is a really big deal. I’m going to be interning at a pretty large law firm thanks to Finn and I just…”

“You just what?” she asked.

“I just don’t know if I actually do want to be an attorney.”

“But you told the entire family that you want to go to law school and practice law. You even had me driving you around so that you could find a job.”

“Yeah, I mean, I just wanted some attention, and at the moment I thought it sounded like a good idea.”

Her eyes narrowed as she stared at me.

“Oh my gosh.”

“What?” I said.

“Did you read a book about an attorney or something?”

“No. Why would you ask me that?”

“Did you watch a TV show about an attorney?”

I pressed my lips together and looked away.

“Oh my gosh. Polly.”

“What? I was watchingDrop Dead Diva, and it looks really cool working in a law office and helping people and going into court and giving closing statements.”

Chelsea just stared at me.

“You decided you wanted to be an attorney because of a show calledDrop Dead Diva?”

I smiled.

“Well, when you put it like that, it sounds kind of ridiculous.”

“That’s because it is ridiculous. Oh my gosh, what are you going to do?”

“I mean, I feel like it’s too late to back out of the internship after Finn helped me.”

“Yeah, duh,” she said. “You can’t back out now. You know how poorly that will look, and you know Harriet would be so upset.”
