“Oh my God. That is a nursery rhyme,” I said, glaring at her.

“I’m just saying.” She shrugged. “Anyway, I should go, but you’ll be okay?”

“I’ll be fine.”

“And enjoy the internship,” she said. “Just in case the writing thing really doesn’t pan out for you.”

“Thanks, Chelsea. Love your support.”

“You’re welcome,” she said, jumped up, ran over, and gave me a hug. “I love you, Polly, and I’ll support you no matter what you want, but maybe watch some more episodes ofDrop Dead Divato get you back into that attorney state of mind.”

“Sure,” I said. “Maybe that will help.”

“Yeah, you never know. I mean, it helped you the first time around.”

“Yeah, I guess so,” I said. I didn’t want to tell my sister that I’d already finished watching all the seasons and I had no more episodes ofDrop Dead Divato watch. But maybe I’d watch another law firm show and be equally as inspired.

My sister left the room and closed the door behind her. I walked over to the bed and laid down. What was my life coming to?

I reached over for my notebook and saw the first chapter I’d written in a book I was writing. I was handwriting it, and I thought it was good, but now I was scared I was wrong. What if my writing really did suck?

Chapter9

My nerves were starting to get the best of me. I was excited for the opportunity to work at a law firm, but I already had imposter syndrome. What if I was a complete dumbass? What if I didn’t understand what was expected of me? What if I didn’t even understand what the attorneys were saying? I didn’t know legalese. I was pretty sure if I walked around the office just saying “overturned,” people would think I was crazy. Granted, I had a feeling a little bit of crazy ran in my family, but I wasn’t going to tell anyone that. My new coworkers could find that out the hard way, like my other friends—after a night of partying and too much booze.

“Welcome to Chandler & Whitlock. How may I help you?” A bubbly blonde with the biggest boobs I’d ever seen smiled at me as I walked into the cool, air-conditioned law offices.

“Hi, I’m here for the summer internship program.” I spoke as if I was apologizing. “I’m Polly. I think Travis is expecting me.” My voice trailed off as she just stared at me. Had Finn made a bad joke or something? Was there no internship program? “This is a law firm, right?”

“Oh, sure, honey.” She nodded and held up her phone. “Sorry, was just distracted by a video my sister sent me on TikTok. Did you know that dogs in Mexico can salsa?”

“Uhm, no, I didn’t.” I smiled back at her weakly. “But that’s cool.”

“I’ve got to see if I can teach my dog how to two-step.” She grinned at me and put her phone back down on her desk. “Welcome to the program, Polly. All the other interns are gathering in the conference room on the second floor. I think Max is in charge of the summer program, but you’ll meet both him and Travis today.”

“Cool.” I smiled at her. “Who is Max again?”

“Max Whitlock and Travis Chandler are the two named partners.” Big Boobs looked at me with surprise in her eyes. “You forget already?”

“Uh, yeah, oops.” I wrinkled my nose. “I’ve been so stressed out. I just haven’t known what’s been going on.”

“Oh I get it.” She nodded. “My name’s Boobie by the way.”

“Sorry what?” I asked her, my lips twitching slightly. Was she joking? There was no way her name was Boobie. That would like being called willy or balls.

“I said my name is Boobie?”

“Boobie?” I repeated. Was she trying to say Barbie?

She giggled. “Well, my real name is Barbara Anne, after my grandma from Texas, but one of my boyfriends in high school nicknamed me Boobie, on account of my big boobs, and well, the name just stuck.”

“Uhm, okay.” All I could do was stare at her and try not laugh. To think I’d been worried that I was going to be considered crazy? Compared to Boobie, I was sane as they came. “Well, I guess I should head up to the conference room. Don’t want to be late on my first day and all that.”

“You head on up, Polly. The elevator is over to the right. Also, let me give you a word of advice.”

“Uhm, okay, thanks.” I nodded, wondering what words of wisdom a woman named Boobie would give me. I was already itching to text my sisters and tell them about the receptionist. They would never believe me.

“Don’t go falling for either of the named partners—Max or Travis. Both of them are gorgeous, but they are wolves through and through.”
