“You can take that,” Max said as he moved over to his desk. “You are allowed personal calls.”

“Thanks, Max,” I said softly, and he grinned at me.

“You’re welcome, Polly,” he said as he sat down.

“Hello?” I spoke as softly as possible as I answered the phone.

“What time do you wanna go to Colorado’s Finest later?” Chelsea asked chirpily into the phone.

“When I get off of work, Chelsea. I’m not sure what time yet.”

“Oh, okay. I just wanted to know what time I need to start getting ready.”

“I don’t know.” I could see Max staring at me. “Look, I can meet you there. You don’t have to wait on me before you go.”

“Oh, are you sure?” she said. “I don’t wanna go by myself, and Harriet is busy tonight, but I guess I can ask Lily to come with me. I think she is back from her trip in LA.”

“Oh, cool, I haven’t seen Lily in months,” I said, smiling, thinking of Chelsea’s best friend. Lily was like a fourth sister to us. She had been over at our house all the time. “I have a new friend at work, Natasha. I can ask her if she wants to come as well.”

“Perfect.” Chelsea sounded happy. “I will call Lily now. See you later, sis.”

“See ya, Chelsea,” I said, hanging up quickly and picking up my headset again.

“Making plans for tonight?” Max called out from across the room, a disinterested expression on his face.

“Yeah, my sister and I are going for drinks tonight.” I nodded. “When I’m done with work, of course.”

“Of course.” He nodded. “Where are you going?”

“Colorado’s Finest Beers,” I said with a small smile. “It’s a cute, funky bar in town.”

“The red barn building?” he asked, and I nodded. “I’ve passed it.”

“It’s fun.”

“Your boyfriend not going tonight?”

“No, he has to work,” I said, blushing. “He’s on night shift right now.”

“Aww, all the morning sex makes sense right now.” He winked at me, and I could feel my face going red. Why did he have to keep bringing that up?

“Well, maybe we just like morning sex,” I said, feeling annoyed. “Maybe we just like making love whenever we have the chance.”

“Maybe,” he said with a smirk. “I just have one request of you.”

“What’s that?” I asked him suspiciously.

“Please try not to bang your boyfriend at the office party on Friday.” He chuckled. “You might feel like it’s exciting to bang at work, but trust me when I say I don’t want to walk in on that.”

“Don’t worry about it.” I pressed my lips together. “I think we can control ourselves for a couple of hours.”

“Good,” he said, standing up again. “Well, I’m done for the day. Email me the transcription when you’re done. I will see you tomorrow, Polly.”

“Yes, Max. Have a good afternoon.” I watched as he grabbed his briefcase and walked past me toward the elevator. “Try not to get stuck in any elevators.”

“I will try.” He laughed. “Feel free to leave as soon as you’re done today. Enjoy your afternoon with your sister.”

“Thank you, I really appreciate it.” I beamed at him. Maybe Max Whitlock wasn’t so bad, after all. Maybe he was a nice guy. Maybe we’d even end up as friends by the end of the summer. Maybe.
