Ben: I’ll explain in person! :)

Polly: Okay, sounds good. See you at six?

Ben: Perfect!

“He seems like he’s down.” I smiled at Chelsea as I put my phone down on the mattress. “He didn’t freak out. I think everything is going to work out perfectly!”

“Yes.” She grinned. “I told you it would all work out. It always does.”

Chapter19

Istared at my phone as I waited outside the office for Ben to arrive. I was really excited to meet him. I hoped that he would appreciate the effort I’d put into my attire. I was wearing a skintight black skirt and a red top that I knew clung to me like a second skin. I had on a full face of makeup, and I was ready to impress everyone when I walked into the office party, including Max. Max had never seen me dressed up like this before, and I wondered what he would say. He also hadn’t talked about our work trip at all, and I had no idea what his expectations of me were going to be on the trip.

“Hey, Polly.” Max’s deep voice was next to me suddenly, and I looked up, pleased at his incredulous expression as he took in my appearance. “Well, you look different tonight.”

“Figured I’d get myself dressed up for my date night with my main man,” I said as I played with my long, dark hair. Max grinned at me in response.

“Well, he’s a very lucky man.”

“Thank you.” I beamed at him, surprised at how nice he was being. “I’ll have to tell him that you said that.”

“It’s a pity that you have a boyfriend,” he said as he moved close to me. I could smell his cologne, and my heart leaped as his eyes gazed down into mine intensely.

“And why is that?”

“Because I think there’s a chemistry between us that is undeniable,” he whispered and then touched the side of my face softly. “I think we could start a fire with the heat we generate.”

“I don’t know about that,” I said, my entire body on fire. “We’re just two good-looking people that work together.”

“That also want each other.” His eyes devoured my face. “You can’t say you don’t want me.” He chuckled. “Your eyes are eating me up right now.” He moved his lips closer to mine. “I know you want me, as badly as I want you.”

“You don’t know a thing.” I licked my lips and felt my entire body stilling as he put his hand on my waist.

“Tell me you don’t want me to kiss you right now,” he whispered against my lips. “Tell me that Ben is the only one on your mind.”

I swallowed hard as he brought me in closer to him, but then I remembered that if I kissed him, I’d look like a horrible cheat. And even though it wasn’t true, I didn’t want him to think that I was that sort of person. I pushed him away from me and smiled sweetly. “Sorry, Max, I’m not that sort of girl.” He just stared at me for a few moments and then nodded. He looked past me, and his expression changed. I turned in the direction he was looking and noticed an older, balding man hovering next to us.

“Polly?” the older man said, and I nodded, confused as to who he was. “Polly!” He started grinning now, and I could feel my stomach dropping. Who the hell was this man with the beer belly and no hair?

“Polly, who’s this?” Max asked me, curiosity in his tone.

“I’m Ben.” The old man stepped forward, offering his hand. “I’m Polly’s boyfriend.”

“You’re Polly’s boyfriend?” Max sounded shocked, and I could see his eyes spinning around as he glanced at me and then at Ben. “Oh wow.”

“Ben.” I licked my lips nervously. “There you are.” My voice sounded hollow, and I withheld a groan as he gave me a big hug. What the fuck was going on?

“Well, I’m going to head inside,” Max said, glancing at me and smiling wickedly. “Try not to be too long.”

“We won’t,” I said weakly as I waited for Max to head inside. “Uhm, Ben, what’s going on here?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, grinning widely as he looked me up and down. “I feel like I won the lottery. You look good enough to eat.” He flicked his tongue against his lips. “Maybe when we go to Miami next weekend.”

“I’m not trying to be rude, but you look a lot older than your pics.”

“I mean, just a few years right?” He grinned. “I tried to tell you this morning.”

“What? When?”
