“Where are you going?”

“I want to grab something to eat. If I’m going to be driving you around all afternoon, I need to get my nourishment in.”

“Okay, then,” I mumbled as she left. What had just happened? Was I really going to go cold calling at law firms? I really was losing my mind.

Chapter3

“Oh my gosh. You look stunning.” Chelsea smiled at me as I reapplied my red lipstick.

I fluffed my hair and looked back over at her. “You think so?” I asked, feeling slightly nervous.

“You’re beautiful. You’ve got this, Polly.”

“Okay.” I took a deep breath and smoothed out my skirt before unbuckling my seatbelt. “I am so grateful for you driving me around.”

“Hey, no worries. I know you’d do the same thing for me.”

“Of course,” I said. “There are three law firms in this building. I’m going to try and speak to all of the attorneys. So it’ll be about an hour, I think.”

“No worries, girl. I bet you get hired right away, so it might be even longer.”

“Thank you. I hope so.”

I took a deep breath and got out of the car. I clutched the manila folder holding my resume in my arms and headed toward the office building. It was a smaller five-story building as was normal in Port Sunshine, Florida. We didn’t have skyscrapers and huge buildings, but that was why our town was beloved by so many. Even though we were a small beachy town, we still had a lot of business owing to the fact that a lot of millionaires and billionaires had properties in the area. While I lived in the more modest side of Port Sunshine, I’d always loved coming to the richer side.

I walked into the building and toward the center of the lobby. There was a lady sitting behind the front desk. “Good afternoon. How may I help you?” she asked in a slight Southern twang.

“Hi, Claudia,” I said, reading her nametag. “My name is Polly, and I’m here to interview for a job.”

“Oh, okay. Which firm?” she asked, tapping a pen against the desktop.

I bit down on my lower lip. “Sorry,” I said, flustered. “I didn’t mean interview for a job. I was hoping to find a job. I’m here toask if they’re hiring.”

“So you’re interviewing or not?”

“Well, I’m not technically interviewing right now, but I might be interviewing soon.”

She blinked at me. “And which law firm are you going to?”

I swallowed hard and looked at the names of the businesses in the building behind her. “I’m going to Parker, Johnson, and Pringle LLC.”

“Okay.” She nodded. “I think Dr. Parker is in right now.”

“Doctor?” I asked her, surprised.

“He’s an attorney, but he likes you to call him Doc.” She shrugged. “What can I say? I just work here. I’m only making ten dollars an hour. I don’t…”

“Okay, thank you, Claudia,” I cut her off. She seemed like a nice enough lady, but I didn’t really need to hear her bitching and moaning. Not right now when I already was feeling nervous.

“The elevators are down the hallway. They are on the third floor. Good luck.”

“Thank you,” I said with a small smile and hurried toward the elevator.

I pressed the button and waited. I was starting to feel nervous. I couldn’t believe I’d let Chelsea convince me into going to law firms uninvited. What if they took one look at me and started laughing? What if they looked at my resume, which was bare bones, and said, “What does your experience working at Steak ’n Shake as the cash counter have to do with you working here at our top law firm?” I wasn’t sure what I was going to say.

The dinging of the elevator alerted me to the fact that it had arrived. I walked in and took a deep breath. Just as I was about to press the third-floor button, a tall, muscular man wearing a smart suit walked in holding a dark brown leather suitcase.

“Good afternoon,” I said, smiling at him, thinking about maybe practicing my flirting because he was kinda cute. And by kinda cute, I meant he was one of the hottest men I’d ever seen in my life.
