“Okay.” I give him the truth, then I lean up and kiss his five o’clock shadowed chin. “I’ll see you Friday.”

He waves to the kids before he watches us go into the house. Sully went home with him today and isn’t with us. It will just be us three as Krystal retreats to her apartment, leaving us alone.

“Rick’s not staying?” the kids ask. I look down at them and shake my head slowly.

“We need to talk.”

We spend the evening as a family. I tell them their father and I aren’t married anymore. I explain that if they see their father, they are to tell an adult right away, and until I tell them otherwise, he can’t see them without someone being with them. They ask me more questions about Maverick. If he’ll be back, or if he’ll be my new husband. I tell them we’ll see him on Friday, and I just shake my head, not ready to answer that latter question.

When I climb into my bed, I miss him being in the house. He’s a commanding presence. He makes me feel safe. I miss him kissing my forehead. I miss everything about him. His constant walking behind us to clean up. His order and his need to watch over us.

The next morning, I wake up early and see that Maverick texted me.

Mav

Next time I decide to do something chivalrous, remind me of how lonely my night was. I missed you.

Me

We missed you too.

Mav

What are you doing for the day?

He knows I took the rest of the week off to be with the kids. I smile to myself as I think of what is changing today.

Me

Kids and I are going to Beasts.

Mav

What’s that?

Me

A veterinary clinic. We are getting a dog. Is Sully good with other dogs?

Mav

Yeah, he’ll be fine with any other dogs as long as they aren’t aggressive.

Me

Have a good day at work. I’ll see you Friday.

Mav

I hate that I want to give you this time, but you need it. I’ll see you Friday.

I send him the kissing emoji and then roll out of bed. Lots of things to change. I call Sydney after my shower, and she makes some suggestions. I’m excited for her because Tucker proposed, but my heart does ache a little. I want that feeling. I shake it off and get the kids ready to head out.

“I’ll be with you for the day.” Krystal steps into the kitchen, and I hand her a coffee mug. She loves coffee like it’s life’s blood or something.

“I can do running around without a detail.”

“No, you won’t. Unless Maverick is with you, I’m going.”
