“Okay, give me a moment,” I say, trying to gain control of my erection pressed against the seam of Lydia’s jeans. She chuckles again and the movement causes her to rub against me. “This isn’t funny, wild cat. I’m going to take this out on you later.” She full-on laughs and the sound is music to my ears. She hasn’t laughed like this since I met her, and I love it.

That sound lets me know that she’s finally ready. She’s healed and can move on now.

I release her legs and set her down before I step away from her.

“You can show me your other weapon later,” she purrs as she moves from between the wall and me. I watch her hips as she steps into the family room.

“Fuck, I’m screwed,” I mumble and follow behind her, just like the siren she is leading me to my demise.

CHAPTER13

LYDIA

Last night we couldn’t do what we really wanted to do. The kids brought down their sleeping bags and we crashed in the family room. Maverick only stayed a while longer, then said he had to get home.

Today I’ve decided to come to him. I left the kids with Krystal, and a part of me is having a déjà vu moment. Me going to a guy to ask him why he isn’t progressing us past where we are. I’m tired of putting myself out there for men to hurt me, but I need to talk to Maverick.

Really talk to him and have him listen to me.

I park on the curb because there is a strange car in his driveway. I slip out of my car and slam the door. It’s early on a Sunday morning. A voice inside my head says it’s too early for a morning visitor. I walk up the driveway and notice the dew from the morning frost on the car. It’s been here most of the night. My gut clenches.

I can’t and won’t go through this again. I steel my emotions from the betrayal and step up the stairs to his porch and knock on the door.

“Just a moment,” a female voice says, and I feel the tears pricking my eyes. My heart is cracking. A heart that was finally opening up to him.

The door swings open and a woman a bit shorter than me is standing there. Her light brown hair is hanging loose around her shoulders, and her eyes are green but different than Maverick’s. She’s beautiful and looks at me with a smile on her face. Not a sour smile like Deedee had but a friendly one. She has no clue.

“Can I help you?” She’s in leggings and a robe over a large men’s T-shirt.Property of NYPDis stated on the front.

“Um,” I say, but I’m not seeing her. I’m seeing the blonde bimbo again.

“Are you Lydia?” she asks me. Her voice has a mixture of a Southern accent and a Northern one too.

“Y-Yes.” I shake my head. “I’m sorry. I can’t do this.” I turn and run. I’m almost to my car when arms wrap around me. I start fighting and crying. Tears are rolling down my face.

“Little one, it’s not what you think.” Maverick’s voice breaks through everything. He’s holding me tight and turns me back to the house. I look up and see a tall, big man with his arm around the woman. I stop instantly.

“Oh my God. Let me go, Maverick. I’m so sorry.” Words are spilling out and I’m swung around in his arms. He’s moving and I don’t care, I keep my eyes closed. I’m so embarrassed.

Doors slam closed, and I hear talking on the other side. Then my body is moving through the air. I hit the mattress with a bounce and finally open my eyes. Maverick is standing next to the bed in a pair of low-hanging sweats and a muscle shirt. He rips the shirt over his head before he moves to the door and locks it.

“Zeke, take Jamie to breakfast,” he yells, and I hear a man respond back.

“Maverick, what are you doing?” I ask as I scramble to the other side of the bed.

He yanks my ankle toward him and I’m flat on my back with my legs hanging over the side. He drops to his knees and starts undoing my jeans.

“What I should have done days ago. Or last night. But I was afraid I’d be too rough with you last night. I had nightmares all night long of Deedee with that gun aimed at you. I can’t wait anymore.” My jeans come off and are flung behind me. He spreads my legs and leans into me and sniffs me. “I’ve wanted you for so long. Tell me to stop.”

But I can’t. I can’t stop this because I want this too. He wasn’t cheating on me.

“No other woman makes me as hard as you do. Been that way since the day you sassed me at the zoo. Jamie is married to Zeke, my best friend from my army days.” His warm breath hits my core and I arch, moving closer to him.

He sucks my panties into his mouth, and I cry out. My hands dig into the blanket. It’s been so long since a man went down on me. My panties are gone, and Maverick’s mouth replaces them. He eats me like a starving man. He’s not gentle or sweet. He’s demanding and aggressive. He licks, bites, and sucks, demanding my release. It hits me fast and hard, just like he wanted, and I scream long and loud. My hands grip his head and pull him into me more, but they go slack and fall to my sides as I come down from the most intense orgasm I’ve ever felt. He shifts me up the bed.

“I can’t lose you, Lydia. You’re everything to me. What happened yesterday, you can’t do that again. You have me to protect you now,” he growls over me, and I look up into his handsome, strong face. His eyes are so dark, they are like emeralds.

“She had my daughter.” I defend my actions.
