“I love this look on you.” I watch her breathing hitch when I tell her that. I don’t know if she wants me to tell her I love her or if she doesn’t, but I know where my feelings are. I’ve known where they were for months now.

CHAPTER14

LYDIA

Iroll over and notice the alarm has another thirty minutes before it’s supposed to go off. I roll back and slide under the covers, where I take Mav’s thick morning wood into my hands. His body flexes.

“What are you doing, baby?” he asks in a sleep-roughened voice.

“Finishing my dream.” I smile up at him as I take him deep in my mouth. He groans and pushes my hair back to watch me slide up and down his cock. When it’s good and wet, I pull off and lean over it while clasping my breasts. “You said you wanted to fuck my tits.”

“Fuck yeah. Hold them tight,” he orders and proceeds to lift his hips up and down to push through my breasts. I lean my head down and lick the head of his cock every time it peeks out. He does this a few more times before he grabs me and pulls me up his body. I slide him into me, and we make love until the alarm goes off.

It’s been almost two weeks since we first made love. Since that day he’s been with me every night. Zeke and Jamie leave this weekend to head back to New York. Jamie and I have gotten pretty close, and I can’t wait to go up north and hang out with her. We’ve had several double dates together, and I’ve gotten to know Maverick deeper than I thought possible. I’ve seen the way he cares for his friends. But how much he loves my kids always makes my heart beat harder. The kids have started telling him they love him. The first time it happened was a sweet moment that I will always remember.

I move through the zoo and wave at the keepers as I make my way to the clinic. The cub was moved earlier today to a bigger partially outdoor enclosure. He’s still too little to put on exhibit, but he’s starting to thrive finally. It took so long, and we thought we were going to lose him so many times. He’s gotten sick several times. He was taken from his sow too early. He missed out on important nutrients only a nursing mother can give her baby. But Hal called earlier wanting to go over a few things regarding him and some other animals. This is part of my curator position. Not only do I keep track of my keepers, but I make sure the clinic personnel is able to treat the animals in my care.

I open the door and the cool air hits me. It’s still in the eighties outside during the day as the late September’s Indian summer is wanting to hang on longer. I like the warm weather. But as October approaches, I’m reminded we need to get the kids pumpkins. They never got theirs from the fall festival after what happened. Both of them were traumatized, and I wish I could punch Deedee in the face for doing that to my kids.

I move to the main room of the clinic and find Hal. His gray hair is an unruly mop on his head.

“What do you need, old man?” I laugh at him, and he looks up from the journal in his hands.

“I want to discuss our protocols for—”

His words stop as a loud bang erupts in the room. I watch in horror as his head explodes. I scream and drop to the floor with my hands over my head. Blood and brain matter spray all over me. A cold hand wraps around my forearm and jerks me. I look up into cold dark hazel eyes. Eyes I’ll never forget. I try to jerk away, but Colton keeps a hold of me. I reach up and grab the exam table to anchor myself. He releases me and slams the butt of a long black automatic weapon down on my forearm. I scream from the pain. It hurts too much not to be broken. People are yelling, and Colton discharges the gun again in a spray of bullets.

“Where’s the cub?” he demands.

“Moved.” I make it sound like he’s left the zoo. I need to protect him and everyone else.

“Doctor Rorke?” A security guard my brother hired stands at the entrance to the room. He’s dead before I can answer him or tell him to get back.

“Get up before I kill someone else.” Colton’s voice brooks no argument, and I stand up cradling my arm to my chest.

Colton drags me from the room out to the parking lot. He drops a security guard badge to the ground and shoves me toward an older truck idling at the curb. Pain explodes in the back of my head as he pushes me inside. My last thought is of Maverick and my children before I fall unconscious.

Maverick

I hear commotion in the hall and look up to see Cobi and Zeke moving toward me. The look on their faces tells me everything I need to know.

“Who?” I stand so fast my chair slams into the cabinet behind me. “Is it Micah or Michelle? Did they get hurt at school?” I pause and take in their faces. I fall back into my chair and shake my head at them. “No,” I say, and they both nod. I stand up again and my training takes over. “How long ago? Do we have a location of where he took her?” I know as my heart beats that she’s still alive.

“About twenty minutes ago. He took her from the clinic, killed one personnel, one guard, and injured a couple others. A witness says she was injured when they left.” Cobi gives me the rundown.

“Why wasn’t I notified? Why didn’t this come through dispatch?”

“We kept it off the radio. Her brother was notified. He’s demanding that another officer handle her disappearance, not you. We need to go. Jamie can only hang out there for so long before they make her leave.” Zeke sweeps an arm out for me to lead the way.

“I don’t care what her brother says. I’m on this case because of the cub.” I stop and grab the front of Cobi’s shirt. “Did he get the cub?”

“No.” He shakes me off and we are moving again. I climb into my SUV with Zeke in the passenger seat. We follow behind Cobi in his patrol car. We arrive at the zoo in no time. It’s been evacuated, and the clinic is surrounded by police and other emergency responders. I slam my vehicle into park and yank out the keys as soon as I see Darrell. He’s advancing on me.

“No. No way. You can’t be on this. You’re in a relationship with her.”

“I’ll fucking be wherever I want.”
