The old truck witnesses saw him in is at the cabin, and tracks show he went off into the woods. But it’s been hours since she was taken. The forest is quiet, and it scares me because if he was hunting her, wouldn’t we hear something? It’s starting to get dark, and we won’t have much more time. After searching the cabin, we found Colton has access to night vision gear. He could hunt her all night long if he wanted to.

“We have two bodies. North northwest of your current position.” The helicopter flying over the area reports, and I take off.

“Wait.” Cobi tries to stop me, but they said bodies.

I break through a small clearing past a clump of trees and see them. Colton is dead, decapitated by a bear trap. Lydia is lying near him in a pool of blood and her bra. I carefully roll her over and see her shirt has been turned into a sling, keeping her arm in place against her chest. There’s a bullet wound in her shoulder.

“We need an immediate medivac,” Cobi says into his radio, and Zeke comes into the clearing behind us.

“Be careful, there could be more traps,” he says, and I don’t care as I hold her body to mine. I check her pulse and find it’s very faint.

“Baby. Lydia, open your eyes. Please wake up,” I beg her, and watch as her lids flutter.

“A dream,” she says softly. She reaches for my face and brushes a dirty hand down my cheek.

“No, I’m really here. I love you.” I tell her what I’ve been holding back for weeks.

“I wish we could’ve had a life together,” she says before she’s out again.

“No. No. No,” I beg her. I keep checking her pulse. It’s getting fainter.

The EMTs arrive and separate us. They move her to a backboard when her heart gives out the first time. They say it’s the blood loss, but I’m fucking scared. Watching them use the AED on her causes me to fall to my knees. I crawl to where she’s lying after they get her heart going again and an IV connected.

“Don’t do this, Lydia. I love you and want our chance. Please, baby.” Tears roll from my eyes. I can’t lose her.

I hear the helicopter above us and watch as the basket lowers. I stand there until they pull her into the helicopter, then I take off through the woods and toward our car. Cobi drives this time. When we pull up to the hospital, Darrell is there.

He won’t let me back to see her. So I pace the waiting room until a nurse takes pity on me.

“I’m not supposed to do this, but she’s alive. She survived surgery. She’s in the ICU.”

“I need to see her.”

“Her brother has denied you admittance. I can’t do anything.”

“I can.” I look up to see Cobi standing there. “We need to complete our investigation. Can you notify us when she wakes up?”

“Yes, sir,” the nurse says, and we sit back down.

CHAPTER16

LYDIA

Ifeel pain all over my body, and the coolness of an IV in my arm. I listen and hear nothing but the beeping of machines. I open my eyes to a dark hospital room.

“Munchie,” Darrell says, and I turn to look at him.

I cough to clear my throat. “Where’s Maverick?” I look toward the door.

“Don’t worry, go back to sleep,” Darrell says, and I fall back to a dreamless sleep.

“She’s doing well. The police would like to question her when she wakes up,” a woman says, and I open my eyes. A nurse is standing there talking to my brother.

I cough and they both move toward me. The nurse holds a cup with a straw to my lips, and I take a small sip.

I remember waking up before and Maverick not being here. He told me he loved me. I remember it. I look around again.
