“Answer me one question. Did you abduct Charlotte and Alexandra?”

His laugh wasn’t one of admission or guilt, merely surprise. “Contrary to what you’ve heard, Charlotte is special to me. Why would you accuse me of something so egregious?”

“Because the condominium that you paid for is trashed and two women are missing, one obviously hurt.”

I’d made it my business over the years to know by expressions and flinches if someone was guilty or lying. In this case, the anger on Diego’s face was similar to mine.

And very real.

He threw his head back and roared, his second in command racing into the room.

“What the fuck, boss?”

“Time for a killing spree, Benny. Have our soldiers on standby.”

Benny shifted his attention in our direction. “I’ll handle those bastards myself.” His statement indicated the four of us.

“Not Mr. Stark and his friends. Grigori Aleksei,” Santiago advised. “Today they aren’t our enemies.”

“The fucking Russian?”

“He has Charlotte and her cousin. Wewillget them back.” Diego walked closer, staring me in the eyes. “I promise you I will get your woman back. You will need to trust me, Stark. Is that possible for you to do?”

“More than the cops.”

He seemed pleased with my answer, giving me a respectful nod. “Benny. Have two dozen soldiers poised at the marina. Grigori has a shipment expected to arrive in one hour. If there are any issues, I want them ready to strike.”

Benny snickered. “Yes, sir.”

Santiago wasn’t a stupid man. I had to respect that, but I had just as much at stake as he did. “I’m going with you.”

“Like fucking hell you are,” Jagger snarled. “You’re not some trained fucking soldier. I am. I’ll go.”

“No,” I snapped. “The three of you leave. This is my fight, not yours.”

“That’s not gonna happen, boss,” Gary said as he moved closer, glaring at Diego.

Danner did the same, flanking my other side. “I’m not leaving you to fight this alone.”

Diego clapped his hands. “You have loyal men who work for you, Stark. Perhaps we can work together in the future, but you have no clue what to expect.”

I crowded his space. “I don’t know if you really give a shit about Charlotte, but she seems to think she’s in love with you. I do love Alexandra and there isn’t a goddamn thing on this earth that will keep me from saving her. So fuck you if you think otherwise. We are running out of time. The fucking scum will take out his anger on those two women and you know it.”

Diego took a deep breath then glanced around me at my men. “You are right. We could use the muscle. But we do things my way.”

I hesitated before answering. “Agreed.”

I would do anything at this point to protect the woman I’d fallen in love with.

Even if that meant having blood on my hands.

CHAPTER23

Jameson

The Bratva worked differently than the cartel. That much I already knew. Diego handled most of his business inside his home where he felt the most protected.

Grigori and his merry men worked out of a warehouse, using the front offices for their work. The Pakhan’s home was considered sacred, only his closest people allowed behind his hallowed doors.
