Remington really was trying to protect her. Once he succumbed, he would be unstoppable. That monster would rise up, and it would take whatever it wanted.

Her.

It would take her.

He knew how he’d been when he’d cheated on his wife. He knew how he’d reacted to the night he’d been drugged and had sex with Artemis.

It changed him.

For some reason, that switch had been flipped, and the sex that he’d found with the fellow CIA operative…

It did something to him.

Maybe it broke him.

Over the last two weeks since they’d taken out Chevy, and righted most of the mess he’d left behind, he’d been edgy. As of late, he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t been watching her even more.

He couldn’t help himself.

Not.

At.

All.

He crept about, and she was his obsession. Maybe killing El Gato and closing down the Addiction mess with Chevy had healed a part of him.

That was his hope.

Remington wanted to assimilate.

He really wanted to be part of the real world, but he was struggling with making that one last leap.

If there was a God in the universe, he would have mercy on his soul.

And give him this one thing.

Peace.

As soon as the lock was picked, Remmy went to the box on the wall that was her security and took out his own little black box.

The second he placed it beside the security box, the code appeared.

It was that easy.

So, he punched it in.

Then, he reset it to make sure it looked as if the alarm had never been tampered with—just in case.

Because the place was locked down, it was clear that Calyx wasn’t there yet.

Well, he’d wait.

In fact, he’d just enjoy being in her space.

Moving around the bar, he could smell her perfume lingering from when she’d been there last.

She always smelled like a field of flowers.
