She held up a picture of him. He’d looked troubled, as he pulled into the driveway when he returned that day.

“I was going home to tell Karen I cheated on her.”

She flipped to another tame photo that told a story in his life.

“That was me walking into the house. They must have been watching to make sure I went in.”

She went to the next one, and it was him on his knees in the front yard.

“I’d seen them. I knew what my job cost.”

Yeah, she had the pictures he’d wanted.

When she turned on the shredder, she shoved them into the opening, and they were destroyed.

One by one, they went through, and then, when she was finished with the pictures, she dropped in the negatives that Artemis had given the man who was selling them online.

Because she could feel the sadness these pictures caused in him, it pissed her off.

“I lied,” she admitted.

He focused on her.

“About?”

“I do want something. When you find Artemis, kill her, and please make it painful. When The Hunters find her, take her apart for me. Because she hurt you, and I want her to pay for that. I want her to bleed for what she did to your heart. She destroyed a heart that was always meant to be mine, and now, I’m not sure you’ll ever find your way to me.”

As she said it, he let those words wrap around him, and they unlocked him.

This woman risked it all for them, and she never asked him for anything. She saved him and didn’t want to be paid.

“Why me?” he whispered.

She didn’t look at him.

“Because I love you and I have since the day you saved me,” she whispered. “You were my knight, and you saved me when you didn’t have to.”

As soon as they were destroyed, she went to turn around. Only, he was right there.

She jumped in surprise at how close he was, and how silent he’d been.

A ghost.

He was a ghost.

When he went to catch her, so she didn’t fall in her heels, she landed against his body, and there was no doubt that he was turned on.

His body vibrated with need.

“Thank you,” he said, staring into her eyes. “I appreciate what you’ve done for me, and for them,” he admitted.

“Your wife and daughter deserve dignity. I wouldn’t be able to sleep knowing I didn’t do it.”

His heart thumped.

Once.

Twice.
