“She killed our daughter.”

Jagger understood rage.

He felt it too at times. Now, he wanted to use some of him to fill Gamble up until he could heal.

He placed his hand on the man’s leg.

“And for that, I’m so sorry,” he said. “If we could have made you guys stay, we would have. She wanted to go, and we wish we were closer. We would have helped.”

Tears dripped from his bicolor eyes.

“I want my family back.”

Jagger was honest.

And this was the hardest part.

It wasn’t going to be what he wanted. It was what the universe planned, and nothing less.

“That won’t happen, and if you think dying will give you them, it won’t. I wanted to die, and I found that the only way to survive was to live. Storm didn’t kill you because she knew you needed to keep going. You have to keep fighting.”

He wiped his eyes on his sleeve.

“I can’t fight.”

Jagger let him lean on him.

“Then let us fight for you. Let us make the choices that will save you and heal you. If you fight us, you’ll not make it, and your daughter wouldn’t want you with her. She’ll want to watch over you and know you kept going like Remington did.”

He listened to him.

“Let us do the heavy lifting while you just focus on getting through the day.”

Elizabeth held up the sandwich to test and see if he’d let them do that.

“Please eat,” she said. “Dying isn’t the answer. That just makes more holes. Find the answers and find a way to take one more step.”

She held the sandwich to his mouth, and he took a bite. A part of him was still in there, willing to fight. They just needed to see him try. If he tried, they’d get him help here. If he didn’t, he was going to the VA.

There was no choice.

They had to keep him alive.

Somehow.

Elizabeth handed him the sandwich, and opened the soda on the nightstand. It was full on sugar, and he needed the calories. She’d slathered the sandwich with enough mayo to kill a person.

Again, for calories.

He slowly ate, each bite painful and an ache reminding him he was alone.

“We need you to fight,” Jagger said. “We need you to fight hard, and be okay. We love you.”

He ran his hand up and down the man’s leg.

“You’re tough. She knew you’d be able to pull through, Gamble. Don’t let her down.”

He stared into Jagger’s eyes.
