She kissed his brow.

“Just fight for me, okay, Remmy? Don’t let Artemis take you away from me.”

He opened his eyes as if just saying her name gave him some strength.

“She won’t. I’ve been worse. You need to get us help. That’s our only chance.”

God.

She hoped she didn’t have to wade through the swamp alone. She would, but she prayed that wasn’t the game plan for first light.

Remington directed her.

“Take the phone. Head up onto the roof. You may need to climb a tree and get up as high as you can. Text Jagger,” he said, remembering that the man said to call and the Marines would always come for him.

Oh, and he really needed them.

He was putting his faith in her and family.

At the suggestion, that sounded far less ominous than wandering in the swamp.

A phone call or text?

That she could do.

She was in sneakers.

“Will you be okay without me for ten minutes?” she asked.

He nodded.

“Go. Be careful.”

Well, what choice did she have?

Resting his head on the couch, she checked to make sure she had the phone, and went out on the wooden deck over the swamp.

There were only a few trees that would work, and she picked the thickest one. In the dark, she’d not be able to see anything like spiders, snakes or…worse.

Maybe that was for the best.

Using the tree, she climbed up and onto the roof. Pulling out the phone, she looked to see if she had a bar.

None.

Damn it.

She went back to the tree, climbed as high up as she could, and she could see miles away in the distance, lights. They were FAR away.

Pulling out the phone, she held it up, and there was one bar.

Then no bars.

Then one bar.

Then none.

Knowing she had to give it a shot, she recalled Jagger’s phone number, and rattled off the text. When the one bar appeared, she hit send.
