As they entered, Zayn put his hand on his gun.
“Jesus. Wear a bell, Major.”
She shook her head.
“Uh, my house and you should be able to smell us coming a mile away. Why are you all in here?”
They hadn’t wanted to bother them while they were trudging their way through the swamp, but now, they needed to know.
“Well, other than someone tried to access MATE, and someone breeched the gate and we had to stop them? We texted you, but…”
Oh, boy.
Clearly, she didn’t get the text due to the location.
“Where is everyone?” Maura asked. Granted, it was early, but it was quiet in there.
“Rogue is in your office keeping Gamble company—and I mean trying to get him to eat or talk at this point. Dakota is hovering over Eve and Violet in one of the spare bedrooms. Stella is taking a nap in the room with Dianna and our babies, and Jinx is with Michael. Merry and I stayed up, and Boone is up too. We divided up and put someone on each of the kids. Marsha is in the kitchen making coffee.”
Maura didn’t take off her gear. She didn’t want swamp all over the place.
“Is everyone okay?” she asked.
He nodded.
“Yeah, but I don’t like that we don’t have a safe place. Elizabeth has been alerted, but I feel twitchy, and no one likes that.”
Oh, they were aware.
“Is Remington okay?” he asked.
She nodded.
Jagger came into the room with some disinfectant wipes so they could clean off the vests. There was swamp ick all over them.
“Yeah, he’s at the hospital. Calyx is with him, and Reaper is all over him like white on rice. We’re not taking any chances that Artemis will hear about him turning up.”
“Is he going to be okay though? I’m attached to our ex-CIA spook.”
Jagger reassured him.
“He’s good. He was shot through the side. They think the worst is blood loss and the need for a boatload of antibiotics.”
That was good.
“As a heads-up, Elizabeth is on her way here,” Zayn admitted. “Do you think it’s safe to head into the other building?” he asked.
Maura ran the numbers in her head.
Artemis was crazy, but she wasn’t ‘make an assault on Chartres during the daylight’ crazy.
The CIA might have been who was coming for them, and with Elizabeth there…
They wouldn’t dare.
“Yeah, we’ll be good. Keep the kids here hidden, and leave Stella with them. You won’t be able to focus if she’s not safe. Besides, we might be moving out.”
Zayn looked at them.
