“But of course. I’ve studied him. If you want the people who killed your family, then you need to trust me. You pay me well to deliver. I will do just that.”

Alex was getting antsy.

He was working on getting there. It wasn’t easy to move his whole operation to the United States. In fact, it was dangerous.

There were people who would love to stop him, and he didn’t want that to happen.

He had a circle to protect.

Besides, good help was difficult to find. He was limited with any Russian mercenaries since quite a few of them were in Boston, obedient to that ex-Fed, Greyson Croft.

His goal would have been easier if he could have paid Dimitri Gideon to help him. They’d trained together in Russia before he went into business for himself, and Alex had gone into the KGB.

Oh, he’d tried to buy him a few times.

Only, the man was…loyal.

That was annoying.

Because he knew this had to be seamless, he laid down the law. He expected only success since he was paying this woman top dollar.

“I will be arriving by the weekend. I need everything ready to begin my takeover of the city. I want my ascension to the throne to be seamless. Am I clear?”

She knew not to mess with him.

Alexsandr was a vicious human being, willing to do anything to be successful. He had a long memory, apparently, and she didn’t want to live the rest of her life in fear. Looking over her shoulder for the next forty years would suck.

“Yes, Sir, you are clear. I’ll have everything ready for your arrival.”

There was a pause.

“If you do, you will be very wealthy. You can have whatever you want if I get the heads of the people who killed my family. That, to me, is more important than setting up a route with China in that city.”

Oh, all she wanted was to get the hell out of NOLA before it went down.

And she would.

Artemis was a lover of chaos—not death and destruction.

HERS.

She knew who to poke, and who to avoid.

“I appreciate that,” she admitted. “I’m about to get you the bait for your revenge. I’ll use that to get you Mikey O’. When you have them, then, my duty will be done here.”

He understood.

“Thank you, Fraulein.”

Before she could say anything more, the call went dead, and Artemis knew she needed to get this handled.

This wasn’t the position to be in and fail.

Heads would roll.

HERS.

She’d been working on this plan for months. When The Hunters thought she was there just buying up guns and mercenaries, she had been digging in deep, establishing a network to protect her and get Alex started in The City of Second Chances.
