Chapter 5

Davis stood in theapartment above the stable.

It wasn’t a terrible apartment. There was a small bed, a kitchenette, and a shower and toilet in the tiny bathroom.

It was clean, and he appreciated that more than anything. He supposed after being rather successful in the business world, he’d gotten used to, if not living in the lap of luxury, at least having pretty much anything he wanted.

Material things. Since wanting people and having them wasn’t quite as easy as wanting things.

He had admired Kim from the time he met her, but because she was married, he hadn’t pursued her. Now... She didn’t seem interested.

He hadn’t missed the way she’d stumbled over introducing her parents, and he wondered about that. There was so much about her that he didn’t know. But he knew divorce was hard, painful, it tore at a person’s soul, and Kim was surely still reeling from that, not to mention it couldn’t be easy when a person’s ex, who had been the one to cheat, was the one who seemed like they bounced back and were thriving now that they were away from her.

That had to be hard too.

Still, being close to her was better than not. Although he couldn’t quite put his finger on what exactly he felt and why he was going to such lengths.

He probably should just admit that his plan had been ill-conceived and pack up and go home.

Except the idea held no appeal. And more than just seeing Kim, being on the beach of Lake Michigan had been good for his soul. Soothing it, releasing stress, and helping him to open his eyes and actually see his life for the first time in a really long time.

Open his eyes and see how God might see his life.

There was no doubt being so close to such power and natural beauty couldn’t help but point a person to their Creator.

He wasn’t sure of what his next move would be, but he decided he’d change his clothes and go for a jog. That often helped clear his mind.

Lord? I thought I belonged here. And now I’m not so sure. Maybe I’m just getting in Kim’s way. Maybe I’ll just stunt her healing process. Maybe what I want isn’t what I should be going after, maybe I should back off and allow her to find her way.

He didn’t know the right answer, and he asked God to give him clarity.

He had just come out of his room when there was a knock at the door.

The door was solid wood, with nothing in it, not even a peephole, and he couldn’t see who might be on the other side.

He also couldn’t stop the way his heart kicked up in anticipation, and he knew exactly who he hoped it was.

Opening the door, he kept a huge smile from spreading across his face only by concentrating on trying not to scare her away. Kim stood there, looking determined yet wringing her hands in front of her while she looked like what she had come to do was not something she was looking forward to.

Maybe she decided that he couldn’t live beside her after all. Maybe she decided that he needed to leave, and she was going to tell him.

There was definitely a sinking in the pit of his stomach, and his chest grew cold, but he remembered his prayer.

Lord, if she wants me to go, please, give me the strength to do it without argument, submitting to Your will.

“Davis?”
