“Sure.” Griff pulled his own phone out, and they exchanged numbers.

He smiled to himself as he bid them farewell and turned to walk back to the kitchen. It felt like he was doing something good, not just helping them, but helping the horses too. It was a little bit the way he felt about working for Chi. Like he was doing something that was a little bit bigger than himself. Nothing huge, he wasn’t saving the world or anything, he was just helping. It was much better than anything he’d done with the first part of his life.

As he turned, he noted that Chi had been standing a little ways away, a rag in her hand like she came out to wipe tables but stopped to listen. He would have invited her to go out with him to talk to them, but there was no reason. It wasn’t like they were together, and it wasn’t like she had anything to do with what Kim and Davis were doing.

He wished they were together.

Sometimes if a person was patient, things worked out better than what they thought they would. Griff didn’t think this was one of those times, but he would continue to hope. Nodding at Chi, he walked on by, back into the kitchen.

Sometimes, instead of just waiting, a person could work toward what they wanted. He needed to think about that.

Chapter 10

Davis’s step slowedas they got to the end of their driveway.

Kim pulled at the hem of her T-shirt, not sure what to say. Lunch had been delicious, but they hadn’t talked about anything important, and the walk home had been quiet.

“I don’t want you to feel like you have to help me,” she finally said, thinking that maybe he’d only volunteered because he felt bad for her.

“I don’t want to push myself in. But I’ll do as much as you let me.”

She twisted the hem of her T-shirt and then untwisted it before she said, “You’re not pushing yourself in. But... I don’t want to go into a partnership.”

She actually wouldn’t mind being in a partnership. It was scary to be all by herself.

Of course God was there. But sometimes she had a hard time remembering that, and the idea that everything was on her shoulders, all the work, all the responsibility, all the risk, made it hard to breathe at times.

“I was married, obviously, and that was enough partnership for me.”

She didn’t mean to sound bitter, but she’d trusted Todd, and he totally let her down. Never again. She would never again put herself in that position. Even while she thought that, there was a little voice whispering that maybe she just hadn’t trusted the right person.

She didn’t want to go there again. Even if it worked out the second time, she just...didn’t have the energy to put into building a relationship that might or might not work out. She had no guarantee.

She wanted guarantees. She wanted to do things that were sure. But there wasn’t much in life that was sure.

However, her business would have a much better chance of succeeding if Davis was willing to help her. He had experience that she didn’t and knew a lot of things that could help her.
