“You know, sometimes you just have to trust. Sometimes that trust is broken, and sometimes you just have to go on.”

“I know.”

“Anyone who has a business can’t depend on their employees to stay. Sometimes better opportunities come up, and you just have to let them go. It’s... It’s hard, and you appreciate people who are loyal, but you can’texpectpeople to be loyal. Because, most of the time they’re just not.”

“And you can’t blame them for wanting the best for their families.”

“Of course not. New opportunities come up, opportunities that are better for their relationships or better for them. Although, it’s always a little bit annoying when it’s just a matter of money.”

“Even still, you can’t blame someone for wanting to go to a different job that pays better. We certainly would if it were us.”

“You’re right.” He scraped the crumbs on his plate before he looked at hers and said, “Are you done? I’ll take your plate.”

She smiled, like him taking her plate was some kind of big deal. Of course, after he thought that, he tried to imagine Todd standing up and taking his plate to the kitchen, and it was a little bit difficult. Maybe she wasn’t used to being with someone who wasn’t afraid to pitch in and help with the housework.

In fact, he could totally see Todd thinking he didn’t need to do anything around the house, that it was Kim’s job.

How sad to be married to someone who only saw her worth as whatever he could get out of her.

She was so much more than that. He wondered if she’d ever see it.

Chapter 15

Late that night, Daviswas in the stable, doing some of the carpentry work he and Kim had talked about.

He was satisfied, more than satisfied, with what they discussed earlier that day. They talked about a business plan, and they’d written down some bare-bones structure that should give Kim an idea of where she needed to go.

He didn’t mention it to Kim, but he had made a mental note to talk to his lawyer to see if he could make sure that she and the baby were taken care of for the rest of their lives if anything should happen to him.

He had enjoyed their time together while she was making her plan, but he could see from the restless way she twisted her hands together, and how her foot was hardly ever still as they sat at the table, that she was nervous.

It was a big step to start one’s own business and a lot safer to work for someone else.

At least it felt that way.

He almost wanted to counsel her to do it. He didn’t want her to worry or to stress. And while his lawyer had not come back with a set figure, he’d also found out late that evening after Kim had left that her property was indeed worth millions.
