Although, he’d feel a lot better when Kim didn’t hurt anymore and when she didn’t look exhausted.

“I really would like to go hold Kathleen. Or at least sit with her. It makes me sad to think that she’s there by herself, with no one who loves her near. As good as the nurses are, she needs family.”

“I’ll sit with her while you sleep. Let me get you tucked in first. After all, I want to take care of both of you.”

She gave him a smile, and the look on her face made him feel like she wanted to take care of him too, but she was just overwhelmed. He wanted to tell her not to worry about it, but he didn’t want to be presumptuous, and he also didn’t want to get into any conversation that made her withdrawn and sad.

He wanted to throttle Todd more than once for the things that he had done to her, but of course, he had to swallow that urge every time it came.

God loved Todd, just as much as he loved Davis, Kim, and Kathleen. The man just needed to... Davis didn’t even know. He supposed he didn’t care either, as long as he left Kim alone.

They got to the room, and Davis pulled the blinds while Kim went to the restroom.

There was a detached bathroom with a shower, as well as a bed that wasn’t the most comfortable thing anyone had ever slept on, but it worked. The NICU was just a thirty second walk away, and this room was positioned perfectly for them.

She came back out, her hand on her stomach.

“Is it time for your pills?” he asked.

“I think so.”

He reached into his bag, pulling them out and handed her one, then pulled out the drink that she hadn’t quite finished and gave that to her as well.

He was glad she was taking the pills, because he was pretty sure one of the side effects was that they made her drowsy, and he’d like for her to get as much sleep as she could.

She lay down, and he tucked the sheets under her, her eyes closing immediately, as she curled a little around her stomach, one hand on it like she could keep the pain in by pressing.

He put a gentle hand on her back, rubbing circles as softly as he could, trying to soothe out some of the stress and worry.

“Thank you,” she murmured sleepily. He didn’t say anything in return. It wasn’t long before her even breath told him she was asleep, or close to it. He waited just a bit longer, continuing to stroke light circles until he was pretty sure that his opening and closing the door would not wake her.

It was a heavy door, like most doors in the hospital, but at least the hinges didn’t creak, and he was able to get out without making too much noise.

There was no key, and no lock, but she’d been sleeping there every night since she had the baby so he didn’t worry about it as he walked down the hall to the area where he scrubbed to go into the NICU.

It was just a few minutes later when he stood in the doorway. He assumed things had calmed down since earlier, since there were no clusters of doctors and nurses, no alarms going off, and no crying parents in the corner, with a nurse or social worker standing beside them, hands on their shoulders, trying to comfort them.

He’d seen that more than once in his time here and had selfishly prayed every time that it would never be Kim and him crying over their baby.

He walked to Kathleen’s bassinet, looking at her sleeping form, and sitting down beside her. He hadn’t brought his computer or anything to do. When he was with Kathleen, he tried to give her his full attention, even if she slept the whole time. He didn’t really see the point in just sitting there and ignoring her. Maybe if he got to spend all day every day with her it would be different.

He’d been there for thirty minutes or so when Glenda came around.

“Dad, good to see you. Would you like to hold her?” she said in greeting.

She couldn’t have said anything to make him happier.

“I’d love to.”

“Let me get you a chair. One that lets you lean back a little, and if you want to put her against your skin, that would probably be the way she would like it best.”

He unbuttoned his shirt, and was ready when Glenda brought a chair that seemed to be designed for the purpose of parents holding their babies and leaning back with them.

“You sit here. I’ll get her out, and I’ll just set her down on your chest. Hopefully she’ll stay asleep, and she’ll just be snuggled up next to your heart.”

That sounded good to Davis, and he nodded, trying not to look too eager. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this excited, this happy, over something.

He was finally going to get to hold his daughter. Kim’s daughter. Their daughter together.
