“I think they’re pretty fond of you as well.”

“Ha. You think so?” He loved Bev, but Bill still made him a little nervous, like he was watching Davis to make sure he did right by his daughter. Davis had every intention of doing right by Kim - like he hadn’t before - which is why he straightened. “I’d better head back over to the stable.”

“There is something really wrong with that sentence.”

“Tomorrow night I can say we should head to bed.”

“I think there is a three day waiting period.”

“Three days feels like forever.”

“It does.” She sighed as he stood, then slowly stood with him. “Thank you for being here. I would have been scared to be by myself, but it was so much easier to know I could count on you if I needed to.”

“If she wakes up and you want me to come over, just call me, okay? I’ll keep my phone by my bed.” So far the monitor on the picnic table in front of them had been quiet.

“I will. She slept until three am last night. But she’d been sleeping through the night in the hospital, so maybe she’ll start doing that again.”

“I hope so.” He didn’t want Kim to wear herself out. Bev and Bill and he had all worked to make sure she got enough rest, although she desperately wanted to be by Kathleen’s side herself all the time. And the town of Strawberry Sands had rallied around them, providing food and mowing their grass and making sure they knew they were loved and cared for and that they were praying for them.

“We should name that dog,” Kim said as she slipped an arm around him and lay her head on his chest, looking toward the driveway where the Great Pyerenes lay beside their car. In the morning he’d be gone. And so would the dog food they’d set out for him.

“Someone should. I’m not sure he’s ours. He seems to belong to the town.”

“I like that. He’s like a lifeguard, only on land. I do feel safer when he’s around.”

“And he seems to know we needed a little extra watching lately.”

“He does.” She leaned back and looked up at him. “Thank you for being such an amazing father. Kathleen is well and truly blessed.”

“Hopefully I’ll be an even better husband.” He hoped so. Kim deserved the very, very best. He wanted to give it to her.

“You will. I know without a doubt that you will.” She reached up and touched her lips with his. It was a while before he remembered that he needed to go to his own place for the night. But, eventually he did remember, making sure Kim was safely inside before he did. Three more days. He couldn’t wait.
