“You’re right,” she agreed, ignoring his triumphant smile. “I also want to be safe. I hate running around with an armed escort or looking behind my back, wondering when the next hit will come. I want the freedom to live however and whenever I want. I want to be able to leave the house without announcing it to everyone. I want to live my life without fearing for it.”

Angel didn’t say anything, but his face lost a hint of hostility it held before. Adrianna squeezed his hand, calling his attention to her.

“Sienna’s a good person. She won’t take your heirloom from you,” her friend assured him.

“I have money and a business to run,” Sienna added, thinking of the Aghayan fortune that was given to her. “The Lockwood’s legacy is all yours, but I want one thing from you in return.”

Angel lifted his chin in a defiant way and set his lips in a stubborn line. “What?”

“My brother,” Sienna told him. “I would like to have a brother.”

Not waiting for his reply, but instead giving him a chance to think about it, Sienna got up and nodded in thanks to Adrianna, before retreating to her room. Navigating through so much politics and personal mess was beyond exhausting.

CHAPTER 22

AnunexpectednotefromJensen waited for her on the desk, taking away any chance of getting some rest. Despite trying to convince herself to read it later, the curiosity got the better of her, then quickly turning into excitement as she took in his words.

Meet me on the roof at midnight. – Jensen

A memory flashed through her mind of the last time she was there. Jaxon invited her for a romantic dinner when she was still their guest-prisoner. The night got out of hand as one thing led to another and before she knew it, Jaxon was cementing his position of power. She had mixed feelings about that night, but also couldn’t deny that it was a first step that deeper connected her to the Carrington heirs.

Despite her exhaustion, her body was too full of adrenaline to let her sleep. Not wanting to leave the room to talk to anyone else, she busied herself in the comfort of her own space. After a hot and soaking bath, she put on something comfortable, perfectly happy to lounge around and do nothing. During her travels, she had missed her familiar room. Even though she stayed in nice places, nothing could ever match the feeling of home.

As if the thought of home wasn’t enough to turn her mind into overthinking mode about where her home really was, she got a call from her new lawyer Samson Ball.

“Yes?” she answered, trying not to sound annoyed at the interruption. He was only doing his job and the last thing she wanted was to be excluded from business, which meant she’d have to put in the effort.

“Good day, Miss Ryder,”Samson greeted her, sounding older than he was.

“We’re going to be working together a lot, so please call me Sienna. It will be easier for both of us. May I call you Samson?” she asked, not wanting to be presumptuous.

“Of course, Mi—Sienna,”he agreed.“I’m sorry for the interruption, but I thought you’d want to know what’s been going on with your assets.”

“I’m afraid I don’t know much about the Aghayan business except that they got their money by investing in oil and energy,” she told him honestly. “Could you please give me a bit of a summary before you hit me with the problems?”

“You’re right on that. Throughout the years, the Aghayans did various tests to check the natural resources around different lands all over the world. When they liked the results, they bought acres of that land and built oil platforms, mines, hydroelectric power plants, wind turbines, or whatever was most suitable for that particular piece of land,”he explained, summing up the whole business with only a few sentences.

“Okay, I think I understand. Thank you for that,” she said, before asking, “What’s going on now that’s worrying you?”

“You have a good ear,”Samson chuckled, then continued with a serious tone,“I’m sure you haven’t missed the news about the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.”

“We’re being bombarded with the news about it from all sides. I assume it’s affecting the oil business?”

“It’s affecting everything, but not in a way you might think.”

“Oh?”

“Because Russia cut off many countries, our orders have skyrocketed,”he said with pride.“We aren’t able to meet their demands unless we expand.”

“Okay, do it,” she told him.

“We’re going to need you to sign a few documents and approve some of the suggestions first, but once that’s done, we’ll be good to go.”

“Good, prepare everything then give me a call and I’ll come. I assume there’re going to be some meetings where I’ll need to be present?”

“That would be for the best, yes.”

“If you can, try to organize those on the same day. We’re still dealing with the Remington mess here, but I understand the importance of keeping the business going. Can I count on you?”
