“Um, I own my own business; I am a talent acquisition specialist.”

“Mmm, and what kind of talent is requested?” Carla asks, completely tuned into the conversation.

“It is assessed on a client-to-client basis, they contact me, and I try to find the correct person to fulfill the request,” I say as vaguely as possible because this is still a sore topic between Jaasiel and me. Plus, I still have not told him the truth about what it is I do.

“What is your company’s name?” Skai asks. She is her mother’s daughter, that’s for damn sure.

“Black Diamond Acquisitions,” I reply.

“Jabarri..” Megan starts.

“No,” Jaasiel snaps out, and it’s like thunder cracking through the room.

“Watch your tone talking to my wife,” Anson warns.

“Tell your wife that no one asked her to investigate my woman. Whatever she does or doesn’t do is none of y’all’s business.”

“Jaasiel, don’t. It’s not that serious. Your family is just concerned for you, and I am a new person; it is only natural for them to be curious and protective.” He tears his eyes away from his stare down with his brother to look at me. He stares at me for a long while before kissing my forehead. Standing, he goes around the table to where Megan is seated and pulls her up out of her seat into a bear hug, kissing the top of her hair. “I’m sorry, baby sis. Do you forgive me?” Although we can see her shake her head, yes, her words are muffled from being smushed against Jaasiel’s chest, as he simultaneously mushes his brother’s head. I am not going to lie, between him cussing his brother out, the haka, and now him challenging his brother has me ready to get out of here and go back to the house because damn.

The day turned out nice despite me almost beating two of my brothers’ asses. This woman brings out a completely different side of me, and I am not sure how I feel about it since I am known to be the laid-back, even-keeled Gideon brother, but today I was acting more like Atlas. I think back on how I used to clown Josh for overreacting about things with Savvy. Now fast forward, and it’s me overreacting. My attention is drawn to my doorway to see Parker fresh out of the shower, and I want to take my frustrations out while laying in between her legs, but we need to talk. It’s been a couple of months, and we have both been dancing around some shit, and we are going to work that out tonight.

When Megan said Jabarri’s name, I knew what she was going to ask, and I refused to let them dig into it when she had not yet felt comfortable enough with me to tell me what she was withholding from me.

“Tonight was nice,” she says, sitting on the settee at the foot of my bed to lotion herself.

“We need to talk,” I say without preamble, and I hear her take a deep breath before she says, “Okay, I know. Let’s get it over with then.”

“Ni Ni,” I say, a play on her middle name Amoni, “why do you sound like it’s going to be the end of the world,” I ask, slightly alarmed by the sudden change of her mood.

“Because I..” she stops talking.

“Talk baby.”

“I’m afraid, Jaa! Okay! I know you are going to leave me, and I do not know if I can handle that. I fucked around and fell in love with you, and historically that has not worked out well for me.” She is damn near in tears, and that alerts me even more. Getting to my knees, I grab her under her arms and pull her up to the head of the bed with me. I rest my back on the headboard, pulling her between my legs and resting her back on my chest.

“I love you too, baby. Now talk to me.”

“You, you love me?”

“Girl talk, you know I love you. Now what has you scared?”

“Letting you know the truth about my company,”

“You’re not a talent acquisition specialist?”

“No, I am,” she pauses again, twisting the sheet between her fingers, causing them to turn white from how tight she’s twisting. “But the talent I acquire are men.”

“Excuse me?” I say, knowing I misunderstood her.

“I acquire men for women and men for various reasons, most of the time, it is for an event they are invited to, and they need a companion. I have also found wedding dates, birthday dates, hell, even dinner dates. When I met you, I was there because one of my new guys had stepped out of line, and I needed to get him right.”

“Get him right? What does that mean?”

“That night, it was just a motivational conversation, but I have had to get physical with some of the men. Usually, they are dropped from the roster.”

“So you’re a..”
