"You saw it! Bitch hit me!" He glared at Demon and the others who'd shown up with him. "You let your women disrespect your men like that?"

"Take. Your. Fucking. Hands. Off. Her."

Liam was suddenly there, and the rage on his face was frightening, scary enough that the man who was holding me let me go with a slight shove.

"What kind of club lets a bitch—"

"Monk!" The warning voice came from the man who stood next to Demon. "Shut it!" He pressed his lips and pinned a hard glare on the man.

Demon's eyes came to me. "What happened, sweetheart?" His gaze ran over me as if he were looking for the answer.

I didn't want to go into detail, and said simply, "He insulted me."

Someone snorted. Others murmured too low for me to hear what they were saying. Some of the old ladies had come to stand next to me as if to offer support.

"Bitch offered up her pussy and then got all prissy when I took her up on it."

"You're a liar!" I’d said it. I knew I was the one who’d said it, but my voice wasn't the only one I heard. Millie and Lulu's voices had echoed the same thing, and with total conviction. I felt relief that they were standing up for me. "I would never do something like that," I went on, slightly embarrassed.

"I ain't no fucking liar!" His eyes were narrowed into slits, and spit flew from his mouth.

He made a threatening move toward me. Before I knew it, Liam had pulled me behind him and moved in close to the other man. "Seems the majority says you are." He gritted the words into his face.

The man standing next to Demon crossed his arms and leveled a hard stare at me, his expression grim. I sensed that he was someone important, maybe the president of the other club. Then he and Demon exchanged a hard look, communicating without words. I wished the ground would open and swallow me, as I was suddenly the center of attention. While the children continued on like nothing had happened, the adults’ silence and scrutiny made the situation very uncomfortable.

I felt like I needed to say something to break the tension. "It was all a misunderstanding." All eyes turned to me. "He overheard something I said and took it out of context."

Liam's head jerked sideways until our eyes connected. "Heard what?"

I felt heat fill my cheeks, but before I could answer, the man who'd insulted me snapped, "Said she wanted a fucking baby. I offered up my services."

The man standing next to Demon pinned his hard stare on the man who had insulted me and studied him for a moment, before saying with cold authority, "You're drunk. Told you I wouldn't stand for any trouble coming from you today, Brother. Not at a gathering we were invited to, and especially in another brother's clubhouse. Get your fucking ass home. I'll deal with you later."

Red spread across Monk's face and his eyes narrowed with an accusation, directed right at me. His lips pressed tightly, and for a moment I thought he wasn't going to respond. But then he opened his mouth and spit on the ground at my feet before pivoting to leave. I couldn't make out the words he muttered as he stomped away.

All I wanted to do at that point was leave. "I'm sorry." I directed my comment to Demon.

"Not your fault, darlin'."

It was the big man standing next to him, the one who'd ordered Monk away, that responded. "Monk's got issues." Then he turned his gaze to Demon. "He'll be dealt with."

Everyone began going back to what they'd been doing before I’d drawn everyone’s attention, and it took a minute for me to realize that Liam was still standing there, only now he was facing me full on. For a man who went out of his way to show his disdain for me, he'd certainly come to my rescue fast enough. His expression was hard to read, but the look in his eyes spoke volumes. My eyes dropped to his pressed lips, recalling that day at the clinic when he’d pushed me back against the wall and kissed me. It had been rough with passion, consuming, and I'd never been kissed that way before. Just thinking about it made me hot. I wondered if he made love with the same raw, intense passion.

"I suppose now you're going to tell me to go away." I couldn't disguise the bitterness in my tone.

He surprised me by reaching forward for my hand and lifting it between us. "Where's your wedding ring?"

What? That was the last thing I’d been expecting him to say. And why did it matter? Our

eyes never broke contact. I saw no reason to lie or ignore the question. "David and I are getting a divorce."

Something came alive in his eyes, a flicker of something dark, dangerous, and intense. A tangible emotion that caused a flutter of arousal deep in my belly. God, I wanted his mouth on mine. Wanted his hands on my body.

"Liam..." Was that my husky voice?

He grunted, grabbed my hand, and began to pull me in the direction of the front of the clubhouse.
