“Well, I’m gay,” Scott said firmly. “And I’m hungry.”

All three of us laughed. The waitress appeared and we put in our orders. I always got the same thing—eggplant parmesan. David and Scott ordered a large pizza to share and a bottle of wine.

“So, what do you do, Scott? For a living?” I reached for the glass of wine that he handed across the table to me.

“I’m a dancer at Morocco’s.”

I’d just taken a sip of my drink, and his answer caused me to nearly spit it out. I knew that my eyes grew big when I stared across the table at him. Everyone knew Morroco’s reputation. Their dancers did a lot more than just dance for their clients. David hid his smirk behind his hand while Scott burst out laughing. It was then that I suspected that Scott was pulling my leg.

I decided to play along. “I’ve heard the dancers there are quite talented. I’ll have to check you out one evening.”

“I had you for a minute there, didn’t I?” he laughed. He was a jokester, and I liked that about him. David seemed to like his playful side, too. “I’m a plain old dentist,” he finally admitted. “The black sheep in my family.”

“Scott’s brother is a neurosurgeon, and his sister is a scientist with NASA.”

“Wow.” I nodded, setting my glass down. “I’m impressed.” I met David’s eyes. “So how long have you known this loser?” I joked.

“Since he gave me a root canal six months ago.”

Interesting. About the time that we’d begun to talk seriously about a divorce.

“We had an immediate connection,” Scott added.

“Love at first sight?”

They both laughed, but it was Scott who said knowingly, “Well, it was definitelysomethingat first sight.”

There was amusement in his eyes, and I thought it was cute when he gave David a wink. My mind drifted back to the first time that I’d met Liam, and I knew immediately what Scott was referring to. Not love, but a deep, intense awareness of each other. “I’m glad you found each other.” I meant it, and David’s expression revealed that he knew it.

The server arrived with our food, and for the next half an hour we focused on devouring some of the best Italian food in Las Vegas. I always had enough to take home for a second meal, and tonight was no exception. I pushed my plate aside long before David and Scott finished their huge pizza. I sat back and watched them interact for a few minutes, smiling behind my wine glass. I was seeing a side of David that I’d never seen before, or maybe one that I just hadn’t noticed. We’d become used to each other and had fallen into a comfortable rut, not recognizing the changes in each other over the years, content to continue as a married couple wrapped up in their professional careers.

David caught my silent scrutiny and gave me a wink.

“Something wrong with the eggplant?”

I shifted my gaze to Scott and shook my head. “It was excellent, as usual. I always bring some home. You two devoured that pizza like it was your last meal.”

“Well, I worked out today, so I can afford the extra carbs,” he quipped. “Trying to get David to join so we can work out together.”

I didn’t mean to snort, but it slipped out when I tried to picture David at the gym in workout gear. He hated any kind of physical activity and stayed in shape only by eating the right foods and portions just so he wouldn’t have to do any. “Good luck with that.”

“Yeah, I know, he’s lazy.”

That comment wiped the smile right off David’s face. “I am not lazy! I just eat healthy so that I don’t have to go to the gym.”

Scott glanced down at the empty pizza pan and then looked back up at David with a raised brow. “And eating half a double cheese, all meat pizza is eating healthy I suppose?” He snorted, unaffected by David’s scowl.

I was glad that the server chose that moment to return to our table. Her eyes fell on my plate. “Need a box?”

I was surprised to see that she already had a couple of containers in her hands. “How did you know?”

Smiling eyes met mine briefly before she picked up my plate and scraped the leftovers into one of the containers. “I haven’t seen a woman yet who could eat a whole serving of eggplant.” She closed the container and reached for the pizza pan. “Would anyone like to see a dessert menu?”

All three of us declined. “I think we’re ready to leave.” David was already in the process of reaching for his wallet. He pulled out his platinum card and handed it to the server without receiving the check first.

“I’ll be right back.”

“Thank you for dinner,” I said once the server had left. “For tonight and tomorrow.”
