22 – KINCAID

“What are you goingto do?”

“I don’t know,” she cries softly into her pillow.

I lie behind her, wrap my arm around her waist, and let her cry until she’s finished. When she flips over and faces me, I wipe the tears from her face and kiss her forehead.

“Just give it some time. Time to work through the issues and find your way again. I don’t believe this is the end of things. Right now, you both are in this strange...dare I say, odd place. Neither of you knows how to handle something like this because you’ve never been through it before, but—”

“You have no idea what it’s like in that house with him, Cade!”

“You’re right, I don’t, but I know that you have to be fair about this.”

“Fair?” she scoffs.

“Yeah.”

“I’ve been as fair as I know how to be. I can’t continue to live this lie anymore, believing that things will get better when I know in my heart that they won’t.”

“Just be patient, okay?”

She closes her eyes against my words but softly says, “He doesn’t trust me. I see the look in his eyes when he thinks that I’m not looking. He thinks I’m holding secrets back from him and that there’s something else I’m not telling him. He won’t even sleep in the same bed as me anymore. He won’t kiss me or hold me or touch me. We haven’t had sex since....”

“Shhh,” I say, not wanting or needing to hear more of what she has to say.

We remain silent until she says, “I thought you were right. Maybe if I finally told the truth, we could find our way back to one another again, and he would forgive me, but he hasn’t. He won’t, Cade. I know him. He’s as stubborn as a bull.”

Smirking, I reply, “He is. But I know him, Laur, and Drew loves you with all his heart. He’s hurting right now, and that’s why he wants this divorce. He feels as if he’s made a fool of himself.”

She flips over onto her back and stares at the ceiling.

“I can’t go back home.”

“You can and you will,” I reply.
