She pulls her fingers through her long, blonde hair before she looks up at me in embarrassment. Her face pinkens, and her eyes well up in tears.

“Laur,” I say, sitting back on the bed beside her. I take her hand and press a kiss to it. “I love you. You’re one of my best friends, but I don’t love you that way anymore. I did for a long time. Right now, I want you happy, and I want Drew happy. You’re in a bad place, and I’m just a convenient solution but not the right one.”

She sobs and nods her head.

“I’m calling you a car to take you home, okay?”

She looks up at me again and presses her lips softly against mine.

Pulling back, she says, “Okay.”

“Go to the bathroom and get yourself together.”

She nods and climbs off the bed but stops in the bathroom doorway.

“Cade?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for being a real friend.”

Smiling back at her, I say, “Always.”

“Cade?”

“Yeah?”

“You should try screwing around for a bit. Stop trying to make every woman into your life partner. Live your life for a while and find selfish happiness for yourself.”

“You think screwing around will do that?”

“For you? Yeah. You’ve never selfishly engaged in anything. Just go out and fuck around for a bit like Shep does. Before you tie yourself into perpetual heartache with a lifetime partner,” she says sadly.

She closes the door behind her, and I pick up the phone to make the call. It’s not always easy being a friend, but maybe tonight it was easier because of a certain little sprite of a girl who won’t leave my mind.
