“I need a word with mywife,” Nicky seethes.

I frown briefly and turn back to Cade with an apologetic look as he glares at my husband. “Cade, I’m—”

“Don’t bother.” He shakes his head and turns to walk away from me.

Nicky grabs me by the elbow and turns me to face him.

“I knew you were chasing after him when you sent me on that mission to get you a glass of water. I saw the moment that he entered the ballroom. Have you lost your damned mind?”

“No!” I cry.

“Are you still fucking him, Yaya? Because you damn sure don’t like it when I touch you,” he accuses.

“No!” I hiss, pulling my elbow away from him.

“Tonight is about business, not you whoring around!” he rumbles.

Something inside me breaks, and the strength I found after being released from the hospital eludes me. Never has Nicky spoken to me in such a manner.

Tonight, two men that I love, in different ways, have both disrespected me. But I want nothing more than to soothe the feathers of one and to be on top of, around, and under the other.

My will is broken, not just because of my encounter with Nicky alone. It was the look of disgust in Kincaid’s eyes that sealed it.

Sulkily, I follow Nicky back inside, prepared to resume my duties as hostess.

“Get yourself together before you ruin the hard work that your mother and stepfather have put into this!” he hisses as we stand in the foyer.

I inhale deeply and turn around as my mother strides toward me.

“There you are, doll!” she exclaims.

“She was outside getting some fresh air,” Nicky says, forcing a smile to his lips.

“I have a lovely couple that I would like you to meet,” my mother says, looping her arm through mine.

We walk back into the ballroom with Nicky on my mother’s side, like the happy family that we’re not.
