Page 44 of Take Me With You

“Go ahead,” she says, still focused on her book.

I take the book from her hands and set it out of reach, earning a glare.

“Look, I don’t want to fight with you anymore. I was just disappointed about our time ending so quickly, and this seemed like the perfect way to lengthen our stay. It would allow us to get to know one another better without hiding it from everyone.”

She looks up at me and scrunches her eyebrows. “Why couldn’t you just say that?”

Shrugging, I reply, “I just figured it out my damn self.”

She nods.

“Anyway, I won’t fight you on returning home. I support your decision and promise to do whatever I can to make it easy for you.”

Her eyes light up with hope. “You will?”

Nodding, I reply, “On one condition.”

I feel the energy change in the room as she instantly tenses up, and I prepare for the fight of the century.

“What’s the condition, Kincaid?”

“That you don’t let this end here.”

She closes her eyes, and I reach for and grab her hand. “Look, I’m not asking for promises. I just want a chance to explore the arrangement beyond Alta. To really give you everything that I promised, and I haven’t had a chance to do that. And once we’re done, we can walk away with no strings attached.”

Her eyes watch me warily. “Are you sure?”

Nodding, I promise, “No strings. We can end it whenever you’d like. Just let me make it good for you, Nia.”

Her breath hitches in her throat as her chest rises but does not fall. Her eyes are wide and bright, and I swear it seems like the little freckles on her cheeks and nose are dancing. Her golden skin turns rosy as she blushes and dips her chin.

Grabbing her chin, I lift it and kiss her lips. She moans softly as a loud sound rings out down the hall somewhere. It sounds as if someone has broken something.

“Be right back!” I grumble, getting off the bed and heading from the room.

I leave the door open in case she needs something.

The voices are loud and angry, but as I draw nearer, I can tell that Andrew is angry and Lauren is crying. They’re no longer in their bedroom but downstairs.

I jog down there and see the others gathered in the living room. The girls are trying to comfort Lauren, and Ty is trying to calm Drew.

Shep comes to stand beside me. “What’s going on here?” I ask.

Andrew’s face is red, and his brown eyes are blazing with fury, almost to the point they look red. He turns and faces me.

“How many other dudes’ girls are you screwing? Huh?”

My heart drops in my stomach, and my eyes close. I guess she decided to tell him the truth after all.

Andrew rushes me but Shep steps between us. “Move, Shep! This has nothing to do with you and all to goddamn do with your brother!”

“No, the two of you have been best friends. I don’t know what this is about,” Shep starts, but Andrew finishes.

“He knows! How fucking long did you fuck her, Cade? Huh?”

“It was before the two of you—”

“There’s never been a before us! You always knew how I felt about Lauren!” Andrew shouts, shoving against Shep and trying to get at me, but Tyler’s holding him back.
