Rather than returning to our suite immediately, I head to the ship's rear, sit on a deck chair and pull out my phone.

“Hello.”

“Happy New Year!”

“Is it?”

I sigh. “You two haven’t worked it out yet?”

She sighs deeply. “No. It seems we have five minutes of happiness, and then we’re at each other’s throats again.”

“I’ve tried calling him. I think he’s blocked me.”

“He has.”

“Laur, I’m so sorry this happened to you two. I can’t think of another couple who loves each other more than you two do.”

She breaks down crying, and it pains me.

“I wish he believed the same,” she says in that husky tone she’s known for.

“He does, Laur. He just has to wrap his brain around this. Right now, he’s dealing with the biggest betrayal of his life.”

“No, he’s not.”

“He is. His wife and his best friend. Even if it happened before the two of you, it’s still a blow to him.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Why do you keep saying that?”

“Because he told me he always knew that we’d gotten together. He says he visited me at college once...planning to surprise me, saw us kissing, and saw you disappear into my dorm with me. He says he sat out there all night and saw when you left.”

She coughs before she continues. “Drew told me what we were both wearing, Cade. He says he could see my nipples poking through my tee shirt and tell by how the shorts cuffed the curve of my ass that I had on no panties.”

I frown, thinking about how Andrew must have felt all that time.

“It was the night before we returned home for summer break.”

“The year you had the abortion.”

“Mm-hmm. He said we kissed for a while before you got in your car again. He told me I looked like a whore out there grinding against you and letting you slip your hands down my pants.”

“Fuck,” I grumble.

“He says he was so lost he didn’t know what to do. When we returned home the next day, and he didn’t visit us immediately, he lied about saying he was still at college. Knowing what he did, he wasn’t sure how to look either of us in the eye. He said he wanted to get revenge, and the best way he could do that was to go after me. If you remember that summer, he did.”

“Yep. And the two of you have been inseparable since.”

“Yes, but he only did it to get back at you, Cade. Did he ever fucking love me?” she cries.

I listen silently for a few minutes while she gets it all out.

“Laur, yes, he loved you then and still does now. Jealousy and anger got the best of him, is all. I can imagine what he’s feeling.”

“You can?”

“Yeah.”
