21 – YESENIA

(2Months Later)

Two months have passed since I’ve seen Kincaid Maxwell but not a moment has passed that I don’t think of him. He’s always on my mind.

I miss his kisses, his arrogant smirks, and his haughty looks. But perhaps what I miss most of all is how he makes my body feel. It’s for that reason that I stay away.

I won’t be lured by my sexually depraved mind to betray my husband any more than I already have. Although I know that I’m hurting Kincaid. Or maybe I’m not. Maybe he has found someone to move on with.

I’ve returned to the office full-time because it’s my great escape. It’s what allows me time away from Nicky. That and his bi-weekly therapy appointments.

His therapist says that he has survivor’s guilt. I hear him crying at night when he thinks I’m asleep.

Initially, I tried comforting him when it first happened, but he pushed me away and went to sleep on the couch. He refused to speak with me about it the next day.

So, when it happened again several nights later, I lay in bed pretending to be asleep. I’ve done that ever since. It’s funny. I once thought he was my soulmate, but we can’t do something as simple anymore as comforting one another.

How the hell did we get here?

A knock sounds at my office door before it pushes open.

I look into large brown eyes that are round and accusing.

“I shouldn’t have to come all the way down here to talk to my only child,” my mother says, sitting in the chair opposite my desk.

She crosses one well-toned leg over the other and places her purse firmly in her lap.

I still haven’t taken her calls, and she’s been in Mexico visiting family for the last two months.

“Mamá, I’m busy.”

“Too busy for me? You know I helped you get this spot on this foundation.”

“It was what Abuela and Yayo wanted,” I argue back, referencing her mother and father.

“The board still had to approve it,” she says, lifting her chin higher.

“And I’m doing a wonderful job. They don’t doubt my ability to head and run this foundation.”
