I press my fingers into my eyes, forcing the images away. At eighteen, only a month after graduation, my brother and I were orphans.

Ryan’s plans to attend the local community college to become a pastry chef and my plans to pursue a business degree derailed instantly with the news. After being closed for a couple of weeks, we reopened the pub but closed it again after a few months, realizing neither of our hearts was in it.

Eventually, we sold the pub to the manager, who had worked as a bartender for my father before being promoted to pub manager. Diego Rodríguez had worked for our father for as long as we could recall.

I hear the door open again, and I drag my eyes from the floor to rest upon the visitor. My tired, painful expression quickly changes into barely restrained fury when I see the physical manifestation of the thorn in my side.

“Why are you here?”

The feisty, cinnamon-brown nurse with the red locs, hazel eyes, and high cheekbones, looks damn good in those scrubs. I can only imagine everything she’s hiding under there because the cotton garb isn’t hiding her luscious curves. A diamond twinkles in her nose as though teasing me.

Though my brain says to toss the bitch out on her ass, my dick jerks in reaction to her presence. There’s clearly a dissension between the two, and I’m unsure which will win.

Until she opens those full, thick lips that look perfect for sucking a man off and speaks.

“Not to visit you, that’s for sure.”

“Then you can leave,” I grumble, returning my gaze to my brother.

“Look, I get it. We got off on the wrong foot, not knowing one another.”

“You got that fucking right,” I snarl, surprised at her words but thinking her lips would be better served wrapped around my cock than speaking to me.

“But,” she says, holding a hand up. “I like your brother, and I care what happens to him. I don’t know you, and I shouldn’t have judged you. I don’t like what you represent, which is the opposite of Ryan.”

“Why are you here?” I repeat.

“I’m a nurse on duty. I’m the most dedicated, vigilant, and protective guardian Ryan could have. I’m not going anywhere, Mr. Blackwood. We may not like each other, and that’s all fine, but I promise you I’m not going anywhere. You can have your boys snarling and scowling at me like a pack of angry dogs, but I won’t leave. You can sit here, glare at me, and shoot daggers all night, but it’s not about you. It’s about him,” she says, pointing at Ryan.

“Your point?”

“We don’t have to get along, and we don’t have to speak, but we both care about Ryan. As long as he’s a patient in my ICU ward, I’ll be here as much as possible. So that angry biker energy you’re exuding that you think I’m about to put up with...uh-uh, get somebody else to do it.”

She was getting deep under my skin, but at the same time, I was intrigued by her. When my brothers and I walk into any place, we get one of two reactions. People are scared as fuck of us and become nervous looking for the closest exit, or women want to fuck us right then and there.

This woman was of neither group or at least that wasn’t the vibe I was picking up. I couldn’t quite get a read on her; I’m usually good at that.

Then it dawns on me. She hasn’t said it, but she’s fucking my brother. That’s the only thing that makes sense about why she’s so protective of him and not riding my dick.

“Lady, just stay the fuck outta my way,” I snarl, pushing past her and out of the hospital room.

“You good?” Toad asks.

“Just need some fresh air. I’ll be back,” I grunt, leaving Toad and Frenchie behind with two prospects, Hurricane and Switchfoot.

I find the closest stairwell and take the stairs two at a time from the fifth floor to the first. I don’t allow myself to truly breathe until the rain falls on my head and the fresh air fills my lungs.

I don’t know which situation to escape more, my brother fighting for his life or realizing that I’m attracted to his woman.
