“I don’t need the Chief and nobody else, Prez. I’ll find the fuckers who did this and bring them down, no matter what the fuck I gotta go through or who I have to kill.”

King sits up, drops his feet to the floor, stands, and walks from behind his desk. He leans against it, crossing his arms over his midsection and his boots at the ankles, and gives me a deadly stare. It’s as if he’s trying to see right through me and warn me.

Finally, he speaks up, and the warning in his tone isn’t light or mild.

“I need you to be careful, Nitro.”

“Careful? Careful went out the door the minute someone took a fucking shot at my brother. The fact that they’re still breathing and walking this earth is a testament that there must be some God out there who cares about the fucker. He’ll wish he’d never met his Creator when I find him.”

Narrowing his eyes at me, King says, “Tread lightly, brother. Don’t do shit that might affect this fucking club without clearing it with me first. You got that?”

My nostrils flare, and I roll my eyes, angling my head away from King. He approaches me, narrows his eyes and snarls, “Don’t fuck with me! You fucking hear me, Nitro?”

“Tuigim,” I agree in Irish.

I open the door, prepared to head out.

“Nitro,” King calls.

“Yeah?” I ask, turning back.

Jerking his head out the door, he says, “Maybe you should get yourself laid. Take the edge off before you go on your fucking unsanctioned killing spree.”

I smirk just a little. My prez knows me well. He knows there’s no way that I can settle down until someone pays for what’s been done to my twin.

6 – MONI

Everything has beenquiet on our floor for the last few hours. It’ll soon be bustling and busy with the shift change and the start of visitation hours. I only have one hour left on my shift, and I’ll be ready to call it quits.

A quick glance at Rayna confirms she’s still studying for her finals. She’s working on her BSN, and we’ve all been rooting for her.

As a single mother to a four-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter, I know she catches hell being in school, working as a nurse in the ICU, and raising her kids. She makes it look so easy, and you’d never know her struggles because of her smile or her encouraging words for everyone.

“Hey, why don’t you go nap,” I tell her. “Andrea and I have this. Besides, Pearla and the others will be in soon.”

She glances at the clock and says, “No, I’m fine.”
