“That’s the mistake so many females make. Stop trying to change a man and accept him for who he is or move the hell on. He won’t change, so either you stick with it, or you find someone whoisthe man you want.”

“You’re right,” she whispers.

I grip her shoulder and say, “This is just a moment in your life. You can make it a brief moment where you learned a lesson, or you can let this moment turn into a lifetime of heartache and pain. Your choice.”

She nods.

“I’ll be back. I will make a few rounds, use the restroom, and then update some charts before we leave.”

“Okay,” she says softly, staring at her phone.

I check in on a few patients, update their charts, and use the restroom before returning to the nurses’ station to find Rayna napping.

“Hey, wake up,” I say, shaking her softly.

She looks up and around, then back at me. “I’m sorry,” she says, dropping her head.

“Don’t be. Make sure you get some rest when you get off.”

“I will.”

“Where’s Drea?”

“She’d stepped away on her phone the last time I saw her. I guess she finally reached him because she was cursing as she walked away. I don’t think she’s returned since then,” Rayna says.

“Twenty more minutes, and she can live out her drama, you can get some rest, and I’ll be doing the same. In the meantime, I’m going to sit with Blackwood,” I say, rolling my eyes.

Rayna smiles up at me tiredly and says, “Okay,” while smothering a yawn.

I head towards Detective Blackwood’s room, which is just around the curve of the nurses’ station.

Surprisingly, the biker assigned to the detective’s room is nowhere to be seen. That’s odd because there’s always someone outside the detective’s room. At first, there was a police officer and a couple of bikers, but the two factions seemed to have agreed to rotate shifts between cops and bikers.

I push the door open and step inside as a black figure looks up at me. I see wide, light brown eyes gazing back at me and a thick thatch of hair that falls over a man’s left eye.

“Hey! What are you doing? Hey!” I shout as the man rushes me and slams me against the wall. I grab his arm, trying to stop him before he punches me in the side of the head with his other hand and rushes from the room.

I slump to the floor.

Shit! The pain that courses through my back and head renders me motionless until I can push myself off the floor. The door rushes open again, and fear grips me as I prepare for another attack, but it’s Rayna.

“What the hell happened? Are you okay?” Rayna asks, rushing to my side.

“Check Blackwood. I’m okay.”

“What happened?” she asks as she runs to his side to check the monitors. She gazes at me and says, “There’s a small nick in his feeding tube.”

“What the hell? Did you see where he went?”

“No. I didn’t see anyone. I just heard you shout, and I came running. I heard some footsteps but thought I’d better check on you first. Told Andrea to call security. When I ran around here, I did see the doors closing at the stairwell, though, as if someone had just run through them.”

Fear fills me as my stomach turns in on itself. Was someone coming to finish the job they’d done on Detective Blackwood? What if they came back? Worse still, what if they were still somewhere lurking in the hospital waiting to finish the job?

“Come on, let me check you out,” she says after ensuring Detective Blackwood is fine.

“I’m okay. He just pushed me into a wall,” I say.

The door opens again, and this time when I look up, I look into the dark brown eyes of Caelan.
