Didn’t Nitro say that Ryan didn’t trust them? Then again, how do I know if he’s lying or not?

I trust my gut instinct and keep my mouth shut. All I can do is watch and wait and try to stay alive.

“Simone?”

“Oh...uh, yes, I don’t know how long it will be. That’s not my call, but I know Ryan’s a fighter. I’m sure that he’ll be back on the job before most. He’s not a quitter; if anything, he will be more motivated to find the persons who did this to him than before,” I say.

Jones’ lips turn down, and he nods his head. “You’re right. Just keep me in the loop on his progress, won’t you?” he asks.

“I will,” I say, turning away from my car and rushing back towards the hospital.

The shift is about to change, and more cars pull into the lot as employees prepare to start a new shift. I make it my business to blend in with them as I return to the fifth floor.

I have one focus. Finding Nitro.

***

The packed parkinglot had nothing on the inside of the clubhouse. I thought I was amazed by the number of bikers outside with roaring bikes. I’m overwhelmed by the number inside and their activities.

“What the holy hell?” I ask, looking around the brick clubhouse with exposed pipes and ductwork. That’s not the only thing that’s exposed.

A biker is screwing some chick in a corner, and another is getting sucked off.

A thick cloud of marijuana creates a haze in the large room, and loud music is deafening to the point you can barely hear the person next to you.

“Turn that shit down, some!” Nitro shouts to someone with the word “Prospect” on his cut. The guy moves to do as Nitro says.

Sneers, catcalls, and glares come from a few bikers and women alike. I find myself moving closer to Nitro. A woman in a string bikini and tassels on her nipples passes by and says, “Nitro, you look like you need to be worked, baby.”

“I’m good, Sweets,” he growls.

She licks her lips and says, “I know.”

A few brothers look our way, nod in greeting, or ignore us.

Anxiety creeps up my neck as I wonder how different these men are from the ones who took my mother’s and brothers’ lives. I close my eyes to push those thoughts away and blink them open again when I hear someone say.

“Bout damn time, man.”

A blonde man walks up to us and slaps hands with Nitro.

“Ax, this is Simone. Simone, this is my brother, Axle.”

I stretch my hand out as he eyes me slowly from head to toe before he takes it. “Nice to meet you. Should’ve been in protective custody since day one.”

“Hard to convince her,” Nitro says.

Someone says, “Look at the ass on that one!”

“Watch your fucking mouth!” Nitro growls at the man in passing.

He throws his hands up and says, “Sorry, buddy.”

“Ignore the animals in this zoo,” Axle says.

I smile, liking him already.

“Aye dickwads, put your saggy nuts away. A lady’s in the house.”
