“Shut your mouth,” he says in an eerie tone.

“Selling the guns that kill people—”

“Shut. Your. Fucking. Mouth.”

This time those beautiful brown eyes darken. They almost look like black pools of water. I won’t back down. Nitro needs to know what I think of him, and I don’t know why I need to get it out of my system right now, but I do.

“And killing people when they refuse to do what you want them to do or killing innocent bystanders or victims just to send a message to someone.”

“Fuck those people!” he snaps.

“Fuck those people? Those people happen to be my mother, who stopped at the local grocery store on her way home after work to pick up dinner rolls. Young punks being initiated into a gang happened to be robbing it, and when she tried to escape, they stabbed her in the stomach repeatedly!

“My oldest brother, BJ, my father’s pride and joy. He’d just received a basketball scholarship to Duke. Shot and killed on the court doing what he loved most. Playing a game for the last time with the neighborhood guys. He was supposed to fly out the next morning. Or my other brother, who thought the answer for that shit was to join a gang himself and retaliate against the gang who killed my brother and mother. Lost his damn life in a stupid gang war. Dangerous people like you are what had me freaking out the other day.”

My chest heaves up and down, but my rant is over, and he knows now. He knows that no matter what he says or does, I can never respect what he represents.

“I’m sorry for your losses, but you don’t know me, lady. My world ain’t so black and white. There’s a whole lot of fucking grey in it.”

He turns and storms out of the apartment, slamming the door. Zeus releases a pitiful whimper, and I sit beside him, wrap my arms around him and release the pent-up tears of fear and loss.

10 – NITRO

The last two days,I’ve had little sleep between taking care of Zeus, being at the hospital and doing recon on Cutter. I wanted to sleep tonight, but there was no way that I could sleep at my place with that woman there.

Not the way she had me getting a damn hard-on with just her scent. Then those eyes looked at me like they wanted me to bend her over the back of the couch and slide those scrubs down and fuck the shit out of her.

Then when she snapped and told me about her family, it was more than I could handle. I wanted to comfort her but had no idea how. I’m not good at that. That’s the kind of shit guys in relationships do, and I’m no relationship guy.

So, yeah, I had to get the hell out of there as fast as possible.

I wish I’d left her ass at the club, but she’s clear that she can’t handle being around them right now, adamant she wants nothing to do with them.

I respect that. My only goal is to protect her, not wife her.

The minute the cops learned that Ryan was speaking, he was barraged with questions from his partner, the lieutenant, and another detective. Although his speech is limited, that didn’t stop the dumb fucks from crowding into his room.
