“Why didn’t you finish the job?” Frenchie asks, stepping up beside me.

“That black bitch...walked in,” he chokes out.

Kneeling, I ask, “The nurse?”

“Yeah,” he gasps.

I stand up and hang my chain around my neck. Pulling my gun out, I kick him onto his side, looking at the handiwork I’ve left behind as the links from my chain make crisscross patterns over his back, shoulders, and sides.

When he’s lying on his belly, still sniveling and in pain, I say, “This is for the nurse.”

I release a bullet into the back of his head.

“Get him dressed. We need to get him back into his car and leave him at that bitch’s house,” I snarl, heading for my bike.

The return trip to Gabby’s house is quick. Once Cutter’s back in his car, we head out with a plume of fire and smoke; we’re ghost riders taking off in the night.

Iclimb off my bikewhen we return to the clubhouse. I’d planned on going home, but I’ve got business to handle, and this ain’t gonna be easy. I turn to Axle as he and my other brothers pull beside me.

I approach him with my fists clutched as he climbs off his bike.

“If my brother had died and didn’t come through, would you have thought I was wrong?”

“No.”

“Then why give him a chance to do what grace may have kept him from doing?”

Axle’s not the only one to shoot me a look; Frenchie also does. Unlike Axle, though, Frenchie’s look isn’t about karma. He hates that I’m bringing religion into this, especially knowing I’m not religious. It’s impossible to live two different lives. I know there’s a God, but I also know that He abandoned my brother and me eleven years ago.

“My Da taught us that you can’t ride the fence. You have to go wholeheartedly in one direction or the other. So, I’m not straddling the fence, Axle. I did what needed to be done.”

He glances at me with his arms crossed. “Are you prepared for when karma comes to bite you in the ass? Because she’ll come bearing her fangs.”

“I’ll toss that bitch upside down and fuck her up the ass so good she won’t fuck with another person on this planet.”

“So long as you know,” he says, turning his back to me.

I grab him by the back of his cut and spin him around. Axle’s eyes go to my hand and back up to me.

“That’s fucked up, Axle. Questioning me at a time like that? Fucking with our aura? Fucking with our bond! We’re brothers. You don’t do shit like that!”

“That was fucked up, Ax,” Snake agrees.

“Fucked up or not, I had your back.”

“Not like that! You’ve been questioning a lot of shit lately. Sure, you wanna still be a part of this MC?” I roar.

“You questioning my loyalties, Nitro?”

“You’re a questionable muthafucka!”

“Fuck you, Nitro!” he says, turning his back to me again.

I catch up to him. “Fuck me, muthafucka? Fuck you! You ain’t shit, Axle. Turning your back on me at a time like that. On all of us!” I shout, spreading my arms to include my brothers who’d rode with me and the ones now spilling out of the clubhouse.

He pushes me. “Don’t you ever fucking question me!” he shouts.
