2 – MONI

Ijot Detective Blackwood’svitals on the whiteboard across from his bed, cap the marker, and glance at my watch. My shift ends now, but I’ll stay here a while longer.

I walk to the man lying helpless in the bed with a trachea inserted through his mouth. He’s a gorgeous man with a beautiful spirit, though his eyes have always been haunted, and his mouth is always downturned.

I’ve seen Detective Blackwood on more occasions than I’d care to count when I worked in the ER and even now in the ICU. He’s been the primary detective interviewing victims of gunshot wounds, stabbings, and any brutal assaults that could potentially lead to death.

He’s the head of the Oakland Gang Unit investigating all gang activity. It’s funny how before tonight, I would have said that I knew him, that we were friends, because we’re always friendly, exchanging witty banter and corny jokes, and we’ve even shared a sandwich and soda a time or two.

Yet, when he arrived here tonight, unconscious and barely breathing, I had to realize that I didn’t know him at all. Today was the first time I’d known his first name was Ryan because I’ve always called him Blackwood, and he’s always called me Cole.

I just learned he’s only twenty-nine and thought he was much older. I know that he worked his ass off to secure the position as the leader of his department, but because of that, I assumed he was older, closer to my age. Detective Blackwood is only twenty-nine, five years my junior.

Other assumptions I’d made about him were false. Despite his downturned lips and sad eyes, he has a great personality and always jokes, so I thought he had a family.

The man has been here for over twelve hours, and outside his partner and other detectives, no one has visited him. Not a wife, kids, girlfriend, parents, or siblings.

My heart breaks for this man whom I thought of as a friend. I can’t help but want to sit by his side so that he won’t be alone if he wakes...or passes over.

I pull up a chair to his bedside and pull out my phone. Sighing, I tap the Kindle app on my phone and pull up the latest book I’ve been reading,I Feel For Youby Cassie Verano.

My life consists of this hospital and helping my sisters Niecy and Tiff care for my father, who recently had a stroke. Reading romance, especially erotic romance, is the only sexual excitement I have in my life, other than watchingEbony GaloreandGhetto Tube. The books fuel my imagination for romance, and the porn sites help me rub one out.

My eyes take in the detective again, and I can’t help but think that this is a waste of a perfectly good man. Who the hell shot him?

I glance back at the book and get lost until I hear the door click behind me.

“Hey, Sarah,” I say to one of my co-workers, rubbing my eyes tiredly and suppressing a yawn.

“Moni. I thought your shift ended....” She looks at her watch.

“An hour ago,” I finish for her. “No one’s come to visit Detective Blackwood.”

“Not even his team?”

“They did, but not family, you know?”

“Mm,” she says, checking his vitals. “That’s a shame. He’s a great guy.”

“Same thing I was thinking. Just wanted to be with him in case he woke up anytime soon. I’d hate for him to be all alone.”

“I can check in on him more often if you want to head home and get some sleep,” Sarah offers.
