14 – NITRO

It’s been a week sinceMoni came to stay at my place and a couple of days since we had sex. I fucked up, making things awkward. I wanted to stay in that damned bed and sleep with her, hold her, and protect her through the night.

What the hell am I supposed to do with that? That’s not who I am; my life isn’t made out for that. There are lots of brothers with Ol’ Ladies, but I’m not that guy.

When I’m not at the gun center, I’ve spent my days at the clubhouse, coming home only in the wee hours of the night and sleeping on the couch. I’m back up after five hours and heading back to the clubhouse again.

I’m shooting a game of pool with Merlin when I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. I look up and find Axle in the corner slugging back a beer.

We’ve successfully managed to avoid each other these last few days.

“Let’s wrap this up, Merlin,” I say.

Merlin glances at Axle and shakes his head. “You two need to squash this shit. Bunch of bitches running around in your emotions.”

I slam the pool stick against the corner of the pool table, breaking it in half. Walking closer to Merlin, I point the sharp tip at him and say, “I’m not your bitch or anyone else’s. Watch that shit.”

Merlin narrows his eyes at me and holds his hands up. “Hey, don’t be pissed at me. Didn’t mean anything about that other than that you two need to work your shit out. You’ve been snapping everyone’s heads off and fighting anyone who looks at you wrong, Nitro. Shit ain’t right.”

“I don’t need this fucking shit,” I snarl, throwing the broken pool stick to the floor and heading out of the clubhouse.

I’m halfway to my bike when Axle calls my name. Ignoring him, I have one mission in mind. Get the hell away from him as fast as possible before I destroy some shit.

“Nitro! Come on, brother. It’s me, Axle.”

I turn around, eyeing him before stalking back in his direction with rapid, angry steps. “You say that shit like I know you. I don’t know you anymore. You fucking betrayed me when I needed you the most?”

He clenches his fists at his sides. “Nitro, I don’t want to fucking fight you.”

“Then stay the fuck out of my way,” I snap, spinning around again.

“Can’t do that, bro.”

I rush up to him again. “You betta fucking do that!”

Axle reaches out and grabs my shoulder as I turn again, but this time I spin around and catch him in the jaw. He hits me, and we swing at one another a few times before we go down. The fury rushing through me like a river keeps me from feeling all the rocks and gravel we’re rolling over. It dulls the pain of his blows as I continue to rain down my fists of fury on his head.

“Goddamnit!” I hear somewhere in the distance.

We continue fighting even as hands clutch at the two of us. We won’t let go.

“Let the fuckers fight it out until they get this shit out of their system,” Merlin says.

No more clutching claws, hot breaths, or people pulling at us. It’s just the two of us going at it until Axle tires out. I realize that he’s no longer hitting me, and I wonder if I’ve killed him, but when I stop, he’s lying on the ground with his chest heaving, blood pouring from a cut on his eye and his other one’s swelling.
