The first man, Diego Rodríguez, standing behind Simone, shoots at me, catching me in the thigh as Simone rocks back in the chair she’s tied to, knocking him backward. Diego falls, and the gun drops from his hand, firing off, and Simone screams. I’ve only got milliseconds as he scrambles for the gun. I’m quicker, whipping my chain around his neck.

Sweat cascades down my face, back, and armpits as pain rockets through my leg with every movement.

I blink away the blinding pain and use my shoulder to wipe the sweat from my eyes. Summoning my reserve of strength, I pull the chain tighter using a tall metal rack shelving tons of flour as my back support. I pull until Diego grips the chain at his neck, struggling for breath and his eyes bulging.

Merlin, Toad, Frenchie, Hurricane, Texas, and others circle the room with guns drawn.

“You good?” Axle asks, leaving the second man to Frenchie’s discretion.

My phone buzzes.

“Yeah. Is Moni good?” I gasp.

“She’s good,” Axle replies.

Toad is untying her and helping her out of the chair. Axle pulls my phone from my cut and says, “It’s Ryan,” as he answers it and presses it to my ear.

“Hello.”

“Where are you?”

“At the pub.”

“Then you know, lil bro,” he rasps.

“Yeah, I do,” I grimace as pain shoots through my leg. I click off the phone. “Help me up,” I say to Axle.

He pulls me to standing and leans me against the rack. Pushing away, I hobble towards Diego, unfurling my chain from around his neck. When it's released, I flick it across his chest, and he cries out.

“Stop!” Axle shouts.

I shoot daggers at him.

“Bro, I want this one as much as you do. But you know King will fucking shit a brick about this,” Axle warns, pointing at the second man.

“Can’t let this fall back on the MC, Nitro,” Toad says.

“Shit just got personal, Toad,” I reply.

Turning back to Diego, I ask, “Why? They trusted you. We trusted you!”

“Your dad was like a brother to me.”

I hit him in the chest with my chain. “I don’t want to hear that shit! Why?”

He writhes on the ground with tears rolling from his eyes.

“Shut up, Diego!” Lieutenant Aaron Rivera shouts from his place on the ground. Frenchie’s quick pistol whip silences him, and his body makes a soft thud on the floor.

We turn our attention back to Diego.

“I was in too deep, Nitro. Couldn’t turn back. The gang had me using the pub as a pickup and drop-off point for their drugs.”

“Thought you were out the life. My dad pulled you from that shit.”

“My brother and I started that gang, man. No way he was letting go of me that easily. I had no choice but to keep running the drugs through here.”

“What the fuck happened to my parents?”
