“I won’t let you down, man,” Axle says, gripping my shoulder tightly.

I see the hope in his eyes. He wants and needs a chance to redeem himself in my eyes.

I look around at my brothers in the room.

“Go,” Frenchie says.

I nod.

“I’ve got the cage out front. We can load your bike onto it,” Texas says, holding the keys up.

With Moni’s arm around my waist, I nod, and we follow him from the room.

The Oakland PoliceDepartment is mourning the loss of a fifty-year-old officer shot in the line of duty while responding to a homicide investigation. Lieutenant Aaron Rivera was at the scene of a homicide investigation when members from the street gang known as The Collectors drove by the home, rented by twenty-three-year-old Gabriella Sanchez, and shot the home up.

Lieutenant Rivera was the first officer to arrive on the scene and was just entering the premises when the gunfire ripped through the front door, fatally wounding him.

Rivera was a twenty-five-year decorated officer of the force. Multiple officers arrived on the scene after reports of an officer down were called to nine-one-one.

Police Chief David Arrows says, “I’m sad to share with you tonight that the Oakland Police Department has lost one of our own. He gave his life protecting the community that he has served and loved his entire career.”

This high-crime area is known for its gang activity and is left to be policed by the residents. Unfortunately, that cavalier attitude has cost Lieutenant Aaron Rivera his life.

When asked why Rivera went to the crime scene, Arrows states that Rivera was called to the home by his brother, Diego Rodríguez, the owner of Blackwood Pub.

Rodríguez was checking on one of his workers who had not reported to work for several days nor had answered her phone. When Rodríguez arrived, he found the woman’s body in the living room and immediately called his brother. Rivera arrived on the scene only minutes before the notorious gang rode through.

Rodríguez was also killed in the drive-by. Sources say Diego Rodríguez was one of the founding members of the Víboras street gang and still had ties to the infamous gang. The rivalry between the two factions has lasted more than a decade and resulted in the loss of more than one hundred lives.

It is alleged that the father of Sanchez’s unborn child is a member of the Víboras. It is believed that the murder of Sanchez and her unborn child was a retaliatory hit by the Collectors for a murder that he committed against one of their members.

No arrests have been made as the suspects have yet to be identified beyond their affiliation with the Collectors.
