The door opens behind him, and Sarah walks in. I glimpse three other men wearing leather cuts outside the door like this guy.

“Sarah, call security and have thisgentlemanescorted out,” I say.

“No.”

“No?” I ask, pulling my eyes from the man for the first-time staring daggers at Sarah.

“Simone, this is Detective Blackwood’s twin brother, Caelan.”

My heart drops, and my head starts whirling. I feel a headache coming on because I’m torn between disbelief and outrage. No way in the hell this guy is Detective Blackwood’s brother.

“No. Detective Blackwood doesn’t have a family. Detective Jones said so.”

Shaking her head, she says, “He was wrong. This is his twin.”

“Twin?” I repeat. Still, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out they’re fraternal. The differences are substantial beyond the physical image.

“Yes,” she says, nodding. “I know it’s after visiting hours, but he was just alerted about his brother’s accident, and Dr. Lennox gave special permission for him to visit.”

He must have bribed our medical director because I can’t fathom Dr. Lennox being okay with this.

She stands in the doorway, and I know she’s waiting for me to come with her.

“I’ll be out in a moment,” I tell Sarah, who nods, reluctantly backing out of the room.

Turning back to Caelan Blackwood, I say, “I don’t know what you’re into, but we were told he didn’t have a family. Everything that jacket you’re wearing represents is the antithesis of who Detective Blackwood is. If you cared about him, you would leaveSin Citybehind, toss that damn jacket in Lake Merritt and stop killing people off by shooting poison in their veins, shooting them, and turning them out!”

“Who the fuck do you think you are?” he snarls, the chains on his boots clanking as he takes measured steps toward me.

“A woman who cares about the man lying in this bed. A medical professional who is sick and tired of seeing all the wounded and dying souls that come through my hospital doors barely managing to survive because you and your kind get a damn hard-on by stealing the life and hope from other people! A human who lives and breathes to see the world a better place, minus your kind!”

He stalks closer to me, and his nostrils flare.

“You don’t know fuck about me, lady, and if you’re that interested in what gives me a hard-on, hop on the back of my bike and take a ride with me. Better yet, step into the bathroom, drop to your knees, and I can promise you a good time.”

His scent and tone are carnal and dangerous, but not in a deadly way. Despite everything he represents, the visceral fear within me is more primal than anything. My nipples ache, and my core is raw at his demanding presence. My body hasn’t responded to a man this way in a long time, but his words piss me off.

“I wouldn’t screw you if the world's survival depended on it!”

“I don’t screw, darlin’. I fuck.”

Damn, if he were from a different world, I wouldn’t mind finding out how true that statement is.

“Then take your ass thefuckout of here and back to that fucked up world of misfits and demons you come from, and don’t darken my doors again. He’d be a lot better off without you. All you can do is cause him more pain.”

“You don’t know shit about my world or my brother! The fuck should I listen to you? Now you wanna try telling me again, lil’ darling, what I need to do about me and mine?”

The doors open behind me again, and I hear Sarah hissing, “Dr. Rhodes is on his way in.”

I glare at Caelan Blackwood and shake my head before I turn to leave.
