His chin bobs on my shoulder as he nods.

“That one’s bigger than the others I’ve seen. I think it’s your Ma and Da watching over us.”

“Yeah? What’re they saying?”

“Carry on, son. You’ve done your job. It’s time to let go of the weariness and find peace. No more tears. No more pain. You’ve avenged them. Carry them in your heart now.”

He chuckles and starts singing.

“What’s that?”

“Song by this rock band called Kansas from back in the day. It’s calledCarry on Wayward Son.That’s what your words remind me of. The lyrics.”

“That’s beautiful.”

“Yeah. I think that’s exactly what they’re saying too.”

We climb back onto his bike, and he does something he rarely does; he turns on his music. He fiddles with it until the song he mentioned pours from the speakers.

We take off down the hill, navigating back into traffic with peace in our hearts, knowing his parents are resting now.

I round down the path of fire that leads to the large estate of smoke and mirrors. A façade. What used to be home. I stare up into the mountainous terrain that surrounds the home while the sun peaks it’s way through the tall trees, as I slam my car into park. I don’t want to be here. The sounds of the water fountain to my left mixed with chirping birds pisses me off. Everything about this place shouts serenity but I know what’s behind that black double-wide door.
