Leaving her behind, I headed to the main floor and walked deeper into the house until the basement door was in view. A digital key code hung above the lever of the door, and as I unlocked and pushed it open, screams traveled up the stairs.

I left all my decency on the second floor of this home. I left my morality with the girl with black hair and silk skin. I didn't flinch at the agony the screams released or how piercing they became the closer I got.

Even if it was from Chief Pierce.

The basement was a soundproof vast open space filled with training equipment for Lucca’s soldiers. In the corner, three closed rooms were built. I'd always wondered if they weren’t soundproof to assure the terror would bounce through the basement for those around.

One of the rooms was the control room, the other two were heavy duty and cold with everything needed to extort any information from those who wouldn’t give it easily.

I pounded on the door to be let in, and Viktor opened it. A drop of blood slid down his cheek, and as I took him in, I noticed his bruised left knuckles.

How had I missed that before?

My eyes questioned him.

“Lo, isn’t here,” he replied with a shrug as he explained Arlo’s absence.

It made sense. Arlo was a sick bastard that actually enjoyed exploring people’s pain and limits. He called it his talent. I’d only seen a glimpse of what he did, and that was something I could shudder to.

I still didn’t think it was right. Not for Viktor. Even as a made man, he still had a double life as a DEA agent to uphold, and a battered hand wasn’t easy to hide.

Viktor stepped out of the way, letting me in, and that was when I met Lucca’s eyes.

Leaning on the wall carelessly with rage filled eyes and sleeves rolled to his elbows, Lucca took a drag of his cigarette before putting it out with the soles of his dress shoes.

“Maybe you can give it a try?” Lucca straightened, and I followed his gaze. “What do you say, Chief?”

Pierce sat on a metal chair, hands behind his back, ankles bound, and blood dripping from his bowed head. He raised his head to acknowledge the person who’d entered the room, but as the right side of his tattered face and swollen eyes found me, he almost looked relieved.

I didn’t understand why. I gave zero fucks about him when it meant I could find answers to secure Davina’s safety.

“You’re here,” he spluttered, and the corner of his mouth slightly lifted. “Is she here?”

The room’s air thickened with tension and surprise. My attention shifted to Lucca’s quiet and humorless laugh.

Nothing in our world is ever a coincidence, Lucca had once said. I had hoped it would be.

“I’m the one who will be asking the questions, Chief,” I sneered.

This time he didn’t hide his smile. “Davina is he—”

My body flung forward as her name spilled from his lips. Filled with fury, I gripped his shirt, bringing his face inches away from mine.

“Don’t,” I seethed.

“Good. She’s safe.”

My hand balled, and I pulled back to deliver a blow to his temple. I wasn’t here for a late-night game.

Pierce moaned, dropping his head back.

“I’ll tell you everything I know. I just had to see it in your face.” His head rolled to the side.

“See what?” I spat.

“That you care for her. And all the menace in your eyes is to assure she is safe.”

I didn’t try to explain or entertain his charade. I wanted answers.
