“So, we can take them down?” I asked with too much hope.

“Careful,” he warned. “My reasons for disliking New York are personal, but we are still a famiglia. The only reason they left you alive this long was to see if you had this. Eventually they would’ve given up and taken you out, but this casing filled with your finger prints links the murder of a very powerful politician. The evidence they’ve already collected from his computer all lead to New York. But, it’s not strong enough without this, or you.”

If I’d gone to the authorities, my statement would have proved my story, and without it would’ve been too weak to bring such an operation down. The casing was a threat, and so was I. They needed to have both to make it all disappear.

“Why are you telling me all this? I’m sure this is something I shouldn’t know.”

“The same reason you didn’t say anything after you witnessed someone being shot dead before your eyes. You knew the danger of speaking about it out loud,” he shrugged, “and you weren’t wrong not to. You could have spoken to the wrong official, maybe the wrong FBI agent, and it would’ve made it that much easier to get rid of you.”

“But you still don’t trust me.” It wasn’t a question.

“Don’t take it personal, Davina. In this world, only few have that.” Lucca placed the bag back inside his pants pockets. “It’s late, you should rest.”

Lucca walked away, and the soles of his shoes echoed with each passing second.

I didn’t gain anything by my confession. Just the question of whether Lucca was on our side or if I was sleeping under the roof of the man who I should’ve been running from.

When I finally made it back to my room, Bo was there at attention. Only when I closed the door behind me did his stance relax, but Bo wasn’t the only one waiting for me. Ilias’s blond hair stood messily over his head, dressed in black jeans, and fixing the shirt he’d just put on.

Ilias’s shoulders straightened as he watched me. His eyes filled with questions and unease. “Talk to me.”

I’d made my way to him, and once his arms held me, I did. I told him everything. From what happened that night, to Martin, to hiding and now the conversation I had with Lucca. I said it all in his arms, not leaving anything between us, not even a bullet.

Twenty-Three

Ilias

With only two days away from the charity event Lucca was hosting, the house became filled by strangers. Not another word had been spoken about New York since then. We couldn’t risk someone listening, and the only room that stayed safe from ears or listening devices was Lucca’s office. But Lucca, too, didn’t touch the subject. Davina had mentioned her concern about Lucca, what he would do with the information she’d given him. But I knew my brother. He was a quiet person for a reason, and only said what he chose for someone to know. He planned and mastered the way to always come out victorious at the end. And often, he was trapped by his own mind and thoughts.

Davina had given him an advantage and knowledge of the situation, even if she didn’t see it in such a way. Soon, I would need to make a move as well.

The soft knocks on the door sprung me onto my feet. With a quick glance, I made sure Davina had dressed from her shower and ushered Bo to yield.

Since Boris had been back, I’d noticed a change in him, clinginess toward her. I didn’t mind, but it was becoming an issue as he became anxious when she wasn’t around. With time, he would feel more at ease, and I would work with him to get him back to that.

When I opened the door, I was greeted by short, dirty-blonde hair and a timid smile, but her blue eyes were fucking wicked.

Anna.

By the large rolling rack filled with dresses, she didn’t come here for Lucca’s attention. She was sent to work.

“Lucca mentioned a woman needed a dress for the charity event.” Her dark stained lips puckered. “So, here I am.”

Great.

Anna’s mother, Mrs. Greco, was the head staff in Lucca’s home. She often came to pick up her mother on her days off. Other days, Anna would be found leaving Lucca’s office with an unrespectable appearance. I doubt she’d seen more of the house than his office and kitchen. Yet, here she was, and I didn’t like it.

“Thank you, you can leave now.”

“Ouch.” She winced, but I wasn’t convinced she cared. “But, no can do. I’m supposed to find the—”

“I said you can leave now.”

Anna met my eyes and shrugged. “Fine.” She looked over my shoulder, and her eyes took in Davina from head to toe.

I seriously wondered what the fuck was Lucca fucking with?

A Mafia groupie?
