“He’s not, we would actually like to offer an agreement.” I walked closer to the desk, hating each step I took farther away from her.

“You want me to listen to an agreement when you’ve killed one of mine?” Enzo stood from the chair. Lines creased his features as he spoke, “You are lucky to still be breathing, let alone in the same room I am.”

“Your man entered a home whose house is protected by the Moretti Famiglia.” Lucca’s voice held his composure with a deadly edge.

“You know that wouldn’t even make it to a vote, Lucca.” Enzo huffed.

“He’s a made man now, and it will.” Lucca’s confidence quieted the room.

I continued, “We have the casing your brother searched so… impatiently for.” Enzo’s head snapped my way with poison swirling in the depth of his eyes.

“And I don’t want to waste time with the troubles it would cause the rest of the families or mine if it resurfaced,” Lucca added.

“She lives,” I stated, and searched for her fair skin.

“For your life?” he asked.

Davina flinched, and her striking eyes dimmed with terror. Sweet Davina only had one care for tonight’s outcome, and that was for me to stay alive. While all I cared for was her safety.

“No,” Lucca responded. “For you to have a Syndicate to rule.”

“All in what?” he asked incredulously, “On the good faith and trust of one mere girl.”

“You have my word, and Miami’s,” Lucca swore.

“And yet you know it’s not enough.”

“I know there’s no trust, leaving the reason why I would keep the casing in assurance. If she dies, the casing may just find its way somewhere we all wish it hadn’t.”

Enzo shook his head. “You wouldn’t threaten the Cosa Nostra.”

Lucca didn’t reply. He wouldn’t say such a thing, and deep down, I knew he wouldn’t harm La Cosa Nostra. He would just find another way because Lucca believed in honor and loyalty. He was Mafia.

“I never spoke to anyone about what I’d seen.”

Time stilled as Davina’s soft voice bounced loudly as she spoke between a conversation with a mob boss and New York’s soon-to-be boss. My caged heart beat furiously as my eyes took in Arlo’s rigid muscles as they bounced.

“Cazzo.” Fuck, Leo murmured, amused.

Lucca’s body stilled as Enzo took a moment.

But even as observant as Davina was to read a room and people, it didn’t stop her, and she didn’t give me a chance to try stopping her as she continued, “That night took away my innocence, my humanity.” Her head lowered to her hands—they didn’t fidget— and the few fallen hair strands swiftly moved around her delicate features when she raised her eyes to meet Enzo’s. “I never planned on telling anybody about that night. That was until Ilias’s life was on the line because of me.” Davina dampened her lips. “I’m not here to cause trouble, and it seems I’m now deeper into a treacherous world since the day I opened my eyes in a hospital bed. The last thing I would do is speak about it again, knowing I would put his life in danger and the whole Italian Mafia against me.” With her scar on full display, along with her strength, she stated, “I would win nothing and lose it all if I said a word about just a lucid memory, Mr. Vitelli.”

I couldn’t read Enzo as he just watched her.

“I do admire your sincerity, and oddly, I believe the honesty in your words. But in this treacherous world, that’s all they are, Ms. Cohen.” He paused with a head shake. “The risks are too high, and finding out your father was who placed you deeper into it, a chief nonetheless, causes a concerning issue for my Organization.”

I couldn’t close my eyes, even for a brief moment, after he’d shared the only piece I’d waited to share with her.

Guilt snuck into my eyes as I watched her perplexed expression.

“But by the look in your eyes, you weren’t aware of it,” Enzo said to Davina, surprised. He turned to face Lucca. “But of course, you were.” He scoffed.

It was then Davina’s eyes shifted to mine. They held a hint of hurt, but it quickly disappeared with a small smile directed to me.

Kroshka.

As if she had heard my thoughts, she gave me a slight head nod.
